A “magical maze” of cheap furniture, candles and cakes is preparing to roll out across the UK as a little-known Danish chain nicknamed ‘Little Ikea’ sets its sights on 50 new stores.
Søstrene Grene, a Scandi homeware brand already adored by European bargain hunters, has quietly been gaining momentum since opening its first UK branch in 2016. It recently caused a stir with a flagship launch on London’s Oxford Street — and now, the floodgates are about to open.
The family-run chain offers ultra-low-cost homeware from pastel-hued plant pots to rustic wooden tables and even continental desserts. But it’s the whimsical, maze-like layout and cosy Nordic atmosphere that’s got shoppers hooked.
Retail Gazette reports that Søstrene Grene will launch 50 more stores by 2027, with the first wave landing this summer in Harrogate, Canary Wharf and Stirling. While other retailers are shutting up shop, Søstrene Grene’s boss says the appetite for quirky physical retail is only growing.
CEO Mikkel Grene said: “Customers in the UK have responded incredibly positively to the Søstrene Grene concept. We continue to see strong footfall, high levels of engagement, and real appetite for new locations – even in areas where other retailers are pulling back.”
“We’re making long-term investments because we believe in the continued relevance of physical retail – especially when it delivers a meaningful customer experience and emotional connection,” he added.
The expansion comes amid a gloomy backdrop for British high streets, with many chains struggling to stay afloat under rent pressures and shoppers cutting back due to the cost-of-living crunch. But Søstrene Grene is zigging where others zag.
A new £36 million distribution centre in the Netherlands will help power the UK growth, fuelling a retail push that could change how Brits shop for homes forever.
Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk the discount code platform said, “When I walked into a Søstrene Grene for the first time, I felt like I’d discovered a secret. It’s like Ikea had a boho little sister who’s obsessed with candles and plant pots — and the prices are so low it makes you double take. I can see this becoming a new favourite for deal hunters across the UK.

I have never heard of this store before but am heading to London in a few days so will keep an eye out for it. I love Ikea so I'm sure I'll like this place as well.

The more we embrace foreign companies the poorer we get with more debt and the less we have to spend so ultimately we shall see how this turns out but often foreign companies find they have to up their margin considerably in the UK due to other costs, this include general taxation, high levels of shoplifting and employment costs. I wonder if having the distribution centre in the Netherlands adds or takes away from their costs.
