Lloyds Bank Outlines New Rules for Expiring Payment Card Renewals

  • Replacement cards are not always sent automatically if an account has been inactive.
  • Cards unused for 12 months will trigger a notification letter rather than a new card.
  • Packaged account overdraft buffers are set to be removed in June 2026.
  • The Select account tier will be phased out and converted to Classic accounts by July 2026.

Lloyds Bank has issued a notification to its customers regarding the process of replacing expiring debit and credit cards, clarifying that these renewals are not always automatic. The bank typically dispatches replacement cards approximately one to two weeks before the existing card reaches its expiry date. However, this process is contingent on the account's recent activity and certain internal criteria being met.

The bank confirmed that if a debit or credit card has not been used at all for a period of 12 months, a new card might not be dispatched through the standard automated system. Customers who fall into this category of inactivity will instead be sent a letter from the bank. This correspondence is intended to explain why a replacement has not been provided and to offer guidance on how to obtain one if it is still required for future transactions.

The issue gained attention following reports in The Mirror, which highlighted a customer's experience where the bank's online mobile app appeared to lack a direct option for requesting an expiring card. The user noted that the digital platform only offered pathways for reporting cards that had been stolen or damaged, causing confusion when a standard renewal was needed. In response, Lloyds Bank advised that customers in this situation should utilise the 'online chat' function or send a direct message through their banking portal to manually request a replacement if the automated window has passed.

In addition to the card renewal updates, Lloyds Bank has announced several upcoming changes to its account features and overdraft facilities. Starting from June 8, 2026, the bank plans to remove the £50 interest-free overdraft buffer currently provided to holders of Silver, Gold, and Platinum packaged accounts. In contrast, the £100 interest-free buffer for Club Lloyds customers will remain in place despite these adjustments. Furthermore, the 'Select' account is scheduled for discontinuation and will be converted into a 'Classic' account starting July 1, 2026. These combined updates suggest a significant shift in how the bank manages its various account tiers and consumer benefits over the next two years.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, said, "Understanding the specific activity requirements for automatic card renewals can help consumers avoid being left without a valid payment method at the checkout."
