Lloyds Banking Group is planning on closing 49 branches, which will cost 1,230 jobs in total.

The Group, which owns Halifax, Lloyds, and Bank of Scotland, will be closing branches from two of the three banks.

The branches will close across its Lloyds and Halifax banking brands between July and October this year.

The outlets that will be closing are smaller, ‘micro’ walk-ins, that are staffed by just two people, and designed to help customers manage transactions digitally.

It is another loss for the high street, which has already lost big brands like Toys R Us, and is at risk of favourites like New Look and Mothercare also disappearing.

The banking giant said that jobs will be cut across its branch network and some central functions as part of the move.

It said that it will try and redeploy affected staff where possible, with compulsory redundancies as a last resort.

The Group will also be creating 925 roles elsewhere in the business, and insisted the overall job losses would be 305.

A spokesperson for Lloyds said, “These branch closures are in response to changing behaviour and the reduced number of transactions being made in branches.

“The group’s policy is always to use natural turnover and to redeploy people wherever possible to retain their expertise and knowledge within the group.

“Since 2011, over 90% of role reductions have been achieved through a combination or natural attrition, redeployment, and voluntary redundancy.

“Where it is necessary for employees to leave the company, we will look to achieve this by offering voluntary redundancy.

“Compulsory redundancies will always be a last resort.”
