MERE - New Russian Supermarket Opens This Weekend

MERE, a new Russian supermarket is opening in the UK this weekend. The supermarket company already exists in Russia and elsewhere in Europe.

It has plans to open 300 stores in the next 10 years across the UK. The first store will open in Preston, North England. Followed by Caldicot in the Autumn of 2021 and Mold in Winter of 2021.

MERE claims prices will be 20-30% cheaper than Aldi and Lidl thanks to its no-frills approach. The supermarket says it can achieve cheaper prices because it offers "no service" and "no marketing".

Products are kept within pallets and not stacked on shelves. The supermarket receives deliveries from suppliers straight to its stores, not to distribution warehouses like others.

It stocks a smaller range of goods, starting at 1,200 items, less than Aldi's average of 1,400 and bigger supermarkets of up to 40,000.

The supermarket will have few staff to keep costs low and customers have repeatedly been warned there is no customer service.

So, what do you think? Will you go and visit? I'm excited to see MERE and how cheap things can be. Anything that promotes competition and helps people save money is a good thing.

However, I do fear for MERE. Do they know how much us Brits love to complain? Who do we turn to if there is no service?

Unless those are strange looking aliens looking for a bargain it looks like Mere have coughed up for some balloons for the opening of their store. That seems a frivolous waste of money.

The stores look pretty bleak they make Poundland look like Fortnum and Mason. Lets hope shoplifters don't get a injection of polonium from a pointed umbrella.

A penny saved is a penny earnt though.

Even less range than Aldi and Lidl but some good prices. Seems to have a bit more branded goods than Lidl and Aldi so if you go for those then it could be good. Definitely seems like it will be the cheapest shop for food but you won't be able to get all you need there so you'll have to use at least one other supermarket as well.
