Sainsbury’s to Close 500+ Stores Early on May 5 for Bank Holiday

- Sainsbury’s will shut over 500 stores at 8pm on Monday, May 5, 2025, for the Early May bank holiday.
- Many UK supermarkets, including Tesco, Asda, and Aldi, will also adjust their hours for the holiday.
- Sainsbury’s convenience stores and branches in Scotland will remain open later, until 11pm.
Sainsbury’s has confirmed that over 500 of its supermarkets across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland will close early on Monday, May 5, 2025, in observance of the Early May bank holiday. The closures, which will see stores shut their doors at 8pm, come as part of the retailer’s standard practice of adjusting hours during bank holiday weekends.
However, if you find yourself running out of essentials last minute, there’s no need to panic. Sainsbury’s convenience stores and locations in Scotland will remain open later, until 11pm, so you’ll still have time to grab what you need. A spokesperson for the supermarket confirmed that most of their supermarkets will operate from 8am to 8pm, while their convenience stores will stick to their regular hours of 7am to 11pm.
Sainsbury’s is not the only supermarket adjusting their hours for the Early May bank holiday. Tesco will be operating reduced hours, closing at 6pm in England and 8pm in Scotland, while Aldi will shut at 8pm, two hours earlier than usual. Asda, on the other hand, is maintaining its regular opening hours, though shoppers are encouraged to check the Asda app for specific store details.
