Tesco Is Cheapest Supermarket for Summer Berries, Research Reveals

Tesco is the cheapest supermarket for summer berries, independent price comparison research has found.

National supermarket chain Tesco comes out top when comparing the prices for strawberries, raspberries and blueberries.

It was found to be up to 47% cheaper than other supermarket rivals including Sainsbury's, Morrisons and ASDA.

LatestDeals.co.uk, a money-saving community of 1 million members who runs an independent and free supermarket price comparison tool, found that the price for Summer berries varied.

The research looked at strawberry, raspberry and blueberry prices on a per kilogram basis.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk said, "Supermarkets sell different sized packs of berries. So it would be unfair to compare the prices by pack. Instead, we take the cheapest pack available to buy - usually the smallest - and compare the prices of a per kilogram basis. This way you can get a fair and relative comparison of prices. How much does that single strawberry cost you?"

• For blueberries, Tesco was found to be cheapest at £7.12 per kilogram, whilst Waitrose was the most expensive at £13.34 per kilogram (87% more expensive).
• For strawberries, Tesco was found to be the cheapest at £4.37 per kilogram, whilst Lidl was the most expensive at £8 per kilogram (83% more expensive).
• For raspberries, Tesco was found to be the cheapest at £10.56 per kilogram, whilst Iceland was the most expensive at £13.33 per kilogram (26% more expensive).

Tom said, "For strawberries, I was really surprised that Lidl was the most expensive. They sell a pack of strawberries for £2 which on the face of it sounds normal. But according to its website, the pack is only 250g, which means it's £8 per kilogram. Much more than other supermarkets."

"Blueberries had the greatest variety of prices. Per kilogram, Tesco was £7.12, Lidl £7.93, Iceland £8.89, ASDA £9.52, Sainsbury's £11.67 and Morrisons £13.33."

The researchers found some other surprises too.

"You would think that buying a bigger pack of berries would mean the per kilogram price is cheaper. But this wasn't always the case.

"Tesco's smallest pack of raspberries is 125g at £10.56 per kilogram. But buy a bigger pack, 250g, and the price climbs to £12 per kilogram.

"This is because the source of berries changes. The cheaper variety comes from a brand called Rosedean Farms, whereas the other larger packs come from elsewhere."

Tom created the free supermarket price comparison tool when Coronavirus lockdown began. His money-saving community of over 1 million members began to complain of climbing prices. At the same time, the only supermarket comparison website - MySupermarket - had shut down.

"We stayed up for about three days and nights creating the tool as fast as we could. Supermarket prices jumped because they removed all the deals and discounts. For families on an extreme budget, it's important to know where to shop to get the cheapest prices."
