Tesco to Open 150 New Express Stores in Nationwide Expansion
- Tesco celebrates 30 years of its convenience store brand with major expansion plans
- 150 new Express stores to open by 2027, strengthening the supermarket’s presence
- Recent price cuts on popular items highlight Tesco’s push for affordability in convenience shopping
Tesco has unveiled plans to open 150 new Express stores across the UK over the next three years, marking a significant expansion of its convenience store network. The announcement coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Tesco Express brand, which launched in 1994 with its first stores in Barnes and Norbury, London.
Most recently, Tesco opened a new Express store in Burnt Oak, northwest London—close to the site of its first-ever store founded by Jack Cohen in 1929. The retailer has not yet confirmed the locations of the upcoming stores but has emphasized its commitment to serving local communities.
Kevin Tindall, Tesco's Managing Director of UK Stores, said: “Burnt Oak has a special place in Tesco history, and we’re proud to be serving its local community once again – alongside thousands more across the country.”
To further enhance its convenience store offering, Tesco has implemented price cuts across 200 products, including staples like milk, bread, and chicken, with prices reduced by an average of 10%. These changes aim to address criticisms of higher costs at smaller stores compared to larger supermarkets.
Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, commented: “Tesco’s expansion into convenience stores shows its commitment to accessibility while making efforts to reduce the price gap. It’s a welcome move for consumers."
I do like Tesco Express convenience stores but unfortunately there are none that are convenient to me. In fact the main Tesco store is about a 15 minute walk and the nearest Express store is about 20 minutes walk so no point for me. However there are 3 I think in Yeovil. Weymouth had a Tesco Metro store in the main shopping centre and sadly that store was turned into an Express store. Metro stores are close to the pricing of Extra or superstores but without the range and Express stores as we know are convenience stores so significantly more expensive for some items.
It's a shame the Metro stores have disappeared but I'm not that surprised the huge benefit that Tesco has over Aldi and Lidl etc is range of products and so the store needs to be pretty big to have that range. Yeovil has 2 Lidls and 1 Aldi and the main Tesco store could probably contain all 3 of those stores together in area plus have a bit more space left over. It's a fantastic store plus you have access to the high street for further shopping as long as you can fit it into the 2 hours of allowed free parking. There is no option to extend your parking time beyond 2 hours you would have to go to another car park for that.
