I Tried Magnum Supermarket Dupes & A 47p Option Tastes Just As Good

Image
  • I compared supermarket dupes to Magnum’s iconic ice cream – and found a 47p option that tastes just as good.
  • Supermarket dupes from Lidl, Sainsbury’s, and Aldi are all winning on taste and value.
  • With prices soaring for Magnum, it’s no wonder customers are looking for cheaper alternatives.

As the UK basks in summer-like temperatures, it’s the perfect time to indulge in a classic ice cream. Magnum has long been a favourite, but at £3.50 for just three in a pack, it’s becoming harder to justify the price. So, I set out to see if supermarket dupes could deliver the same satisfying taste without the Magnum price tag.

Magnum Classics, now priced at £3.50 (up by 25p from last year), have seen shrinkflation, with the ice cream shrinking from 110ml to 100ml and the pack size dropping from four to three. But are they still worth it?

Magnum Classic

  • Price: £3.50 for 3 (1.16 each)
  • Taste: 8/10
  • Value: 4/10

Overall Score: 12/20

The thick chocolate and creamy vanilla ice cream make Magnum a popular choice, but at this price, you're getting less for your money. Plus, the chocolate’s branding has disappeared, making it harder to distinguish from cheaper options.

Sainsbury’s Milk Chocolate Ice Creams

  • Price: £1.86 for 4 (46.5p each)
  • Taste: 9/10
  • Value: 10/10

Overall Score: 20/20

Sainsbury's dupes are a standout – four ice creams for just 46.5p each! The chocolate is smooth, if not quite as luxurious as Magnum’s, but the vanilla ice cream is sweet and creamy. These deliver exceptional value without compromising on taste.

Lidl Bon Gelati Ice Creams

  • Price: £2.85 for 6 (47.5p each)
  • Taste: 10/10
  • Value: 10/10

Overall Score: 20/20

Lidl’s Bon Gelati ice creams were a true winner. The chocolate is thick, and the ice cream is creamy with a hint of vanilla. At 120ml, they’re the biggest and best value of all the dupes I tried, earning a perfect score for taste and value.

Other supermarket dupes, such as Tesco’s and Asda’s, didn't fare as well, with thick chocolate and watery ice cream, leaving me disappointed. Meanwhile, Aldi’s Gianni’s Milk Chocolate Ice Creams at £1.99 for 4 (49.7p each) were a close second, with a dense ice cream and good flavour – though slightly less sweet than Magnum.

With Magnum’s prices climbing, there’s no reason not to switch to these budget-friendly alternatives. The Lidl Bon Gelati ice creams are the clear winner at just 47p each, offering fantastic value and great taste.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, said, "With prices soaring for premium ice cream brands, it’s always worth testing the supermarket alternatives. Lidl’s Bon Gelati offers the best value for money, proving that you don’t have to compromise on taste to save."

Generally I find Lidl Ice cream either more expensive than other supermarkets or inferior quality myself. I'm surprised by the Magnum's only getting a 8/10 rating for taste and Lidl getting 10/10 that is not something I can agree with to be sure. Occasionally I've got Magnum's on offer and ice cream inside seems much nicer inside than the Lidl versions. Farmfoods often did an offer of 3 Vegan Magnums for 99p and used to buy those regularly but not been in Farmfoods for a while.

I bought Rum and Raison ice cream from Lidl sometime ago and it was unbelievable watery and low quality. Generally I buy bare cones and scoop ice cream. Iceland do 3 Italian ice cream tubs for 6 pounds normally 2.50 each and those are very nice. Normally get the cones from somewhere like Home Bargains as typically they are the cheapest. This works out a lot cheaper than fake magnums and nicer I think. The Italian strawberries, cream and meringue flavour at Iceland is very nice and prefer eating that to a Magnum or lower quality copy.

I prefer Magnum but the quality of Lidl's Almond and Classic versions are very good considering the price difference!
