  • The Warrington-based swimming teacher aims for annual returns between 8% and 12%.
  • She lives with her parents to maximise her savings and investment potential.

Enola Meade, a 27-year-old school swimming teacher from Warrington, has built an alternative investment portfolio worth £96,000 by purchasing rare whisky casks. Despite her significant financial commitment to the industry, Meade has stated that her interest is purely financial, admitting that she does not actually like the taste of whisky. Her portfolio currently consists of 18 casks, managed through the Knightsbridge-based specialist firm Hackstons.

Meade began her investment journey at the age of 21 after receiving advice from a colleague of her father. By that stage, she had already managed to save £20,000 by setting aside £1,000 from her monthly wages. Her initial entry into the market involved a £20,000 investment, which she used to purchase one cask valued at £12,000 and two others priced at £4,000 each. To maintain this level of capital injection, Meade lives rent-free with her parents, allowing her to funnel a significant portion of her income into her assets.

According to reports in The Mirror, Meade considered several traditional and alternative investment vehicles, including savings accounts, ISAs, gold, and silver, before deciding that whisky offered the long-term reliability she was looking for. Her parents also contributed to her early financial discipline by contributing £25 a month into a savings bond on her behalf during her younger years. Working with her portfolio manager, Sam, at Hackstons, she now targets annual returns of between 8% and 12%.

Financial projections for Meade’s portfolio suggest significant growth potential if market conditions remain favourable. At an 8% return, her £96,000 investment is estimated to grow to more than £207,000 over the next decade. Looking further ahead, the value could potentially reach £447,000 over a 20-year period. Despite the scale of her investments, Meade remains dedicated to her career as a swimming teacher and has expressed no intention of leaving her profession. Her strategy highlights a growing trend of young professionals seeking out alternative tangible assets to secure their long-term financial future outside of traditional banking products.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, said, "Investors looking into alternative assets like whisky should ensure they fully understand the risks and liquidity constraints involved compared to traditional regulated savings products."

This is hardly news worthy, she is playing this smart in terms of living at home and is very lucky to be rent free, as for her return on investment, I get the same by investing in the FTSE tracker and S&P 500 which is a lot safer than whiskey casks. I did look into investing into this sort of thing but it seemed a lot of the ones set up were promising unachievable returns and so I didn't bother.

I think I would struggle to invest in something I didn't really understand like whiskey. I can't stand the stuff and have only tried it about twice in my life and hated it on both occasions. That's not just whiskey though but all spirits really. I do like rum and raison ice cream or chocolate but that is about my level of exposure to spirits. I'm really at beginner level when it comes to alcohol which is cider and beer anything stronger than that I don't enjoy but have enjoyed alcopops in the past but the strength of the spiritis needs to be very low.
