Four Basic Aquarium Types for Home
Find quality cheap aquarium and fish tanks for sale!
Find quality cheap aquarium and fish tanks for sale!
  • Freshwater Tropical Aquarium. This is the “standard” in the hobby. When people discuss the types of aquariums that are available, freshwater tanks are usually the first to be discussed. The water temperature usually ranges from 72- 84 Degrees Fahrenheit. They are far easier to maintain and keep. In saying this, this type of aquarium is a great tropical fish tank for beginners. There are no fancy chemical additives (beyond basic water conditioners such as chlorine removers) that must be administered. There is no need for expensive light fixtures or really complicated aquarium equipment.
  • Coldwater Aquariums. A coldwater aquarium is just as it sounds: colder freshwater aquariums. The temperature is usually below 70 degrees or at least room temperature in most homes. One of the most common coldwater species kept in a coldwater aquarium is the Goldfish. Many people had goldfish bowls as a child. Many people today have Goldfish Aquariums. Setting it up is as simple as adding the proper equipment and in return, dramatically lengthening the lifespan of their little goldfish. Coldwater freshwater fish may be a little more expensive when you start shopping for species other than the standard goldfish. Koi and goldfish ponds are great examples of domesticated coldwater fish habitats.
  • Marine Aquariums. Marine tanks require saltwater for the fish to survive. Salt must be purchased and mixed before adding water to the tank. Marine tanks offer beautiful fish, colorful corals, and spectacular invertebrates to admire. These specimens are usually significantly higher in price as compared to the tropical freshwater specimens. In general, marine fish are a little more sensitive to water parameters (conditions), some require specialized diets, and in some locations is it difficult to find a supplier or fish store. Marine aquarium equipment is significantly more expensive due mainly to keeping coral.
  • Brackish Aquariums. When discussing types of aquariums or aquarium systems, brackish water systems are very few and far between in the hobby. Brackish water is a mixture of saltwater and freshwater. It’s like in the middle, not freshwater, but not as strong as marine saltwater. The selection of fish available is very few with the most popular being the Puffer (Tetraodon nigroviridis) that is labeled “Freshwater Puffer” when it is actually a brackish water fish. People generally do not have much success with brackish water fish due to the water conditions are hard to maintain and most of the fish that are brackish fish have not been housed properly before they end up in your home aquarium.

Things to Consider before Buying Aquariums

  • Cost. Potential aquarium owners often see the price tag on a special package deal and assume they can get started for a few pounds. Don't be fooled into thinking you'll get started in the hobby for fifty dollars or less. Realistically it will cost a couple hundred of pounds to get started with decent equipment. If that investment is too steep for your budget, it is wise to save until the funds are available to get everything you need. A good way to start is to make a checklist of what you need.
  • Make a Checklist. Expenses include the aquarium and stand, hood and light, heater, filter, gravel, decorations, water treatment, net, and cleaning supplies. All that in addition to the fish, as well as their food. Make a thorough checklist and go online or to a pet store, then write down the costs for all the items you are interested in. Sit down and determine what your bottom line cost is before you make your decision. You may be surprised to see what the actual total cost is.
  • Size. Avoid tanks under 10 gallons if you are a first time aquarium owner. Small aquariums are actually far more difficult to manage than larger ones, as toxins can build up very quickly in the small volume of water. Temperature changes and water chemistry changes can also occur very quickly when there are only a few gallons of water. A must to avoid are those cute mini-aquariums that range from two to five gallons. Although some of the package deals in tiny aquariums may seem reasonably priced, they are not good for the first time aquarium owner.
  • Consider Weight. Be aware that an aquarium larger than 15 gallons will weigh over two hundred pounds when filled, and should be placed on a stand rather than a shelf or desk. You'll also need a place to put the aquarium that is not in direct sunlight, or be subjected to drafts or temperature extremes that could harm the fish. The location must also be capable of getting wet from time to time. Performing maintenance, adding or removing fish and other items from the tank will splash water around the tank.
  • Number of Fish. Lastly, be realistic about the size and number of fish you wish to keep. They will determine the size of aquarium needed, which ultimately impacts the space you'll need to accommodate it. Even if you choose a larger tank, start with a few small easy to care for fish. As you gain experience, you can add more challenging fish. In short, when first starting out, think big for tank size and small for numbers of fish. Plan ahead before purchasing equipment or fish, and you'll have a good chance of success.
