Information
Soundbars are one of most effective way to enhance your TV’s sound quality. They are affordable and simple and eliminates the frustrating wires and cables that come with a full surround-sound system. Most may not sound as great as real speakers, especially when it comes to music, but if you want better sounds with TV shows and movies, they’re far better than the built-in speakers that come with your TV.
So which soundbar should you buy? A good place to start looking at is here at Latest Deals where you’ll find best cheap soundbar from Sainsbury’s, Asda, Tesco, Argos and soundbar sale best buy across a wide range of brands like Samsung, Yamaha and LG. If you’re also looking for a full surround-system check out our cheap surround systems for TV deals and bargains.
What is a soundbar?
Soundbars are speaker systems that are more compact and designed to boost your TV’s audio. Flatscreens may come with amazing image quality, but since the space for built-in speakers is limited, sound quality is disappointing most of the time. Sound bars are easier to set up compared to a full home cinema or surround sound system since it contain a number of speakers in one bar.
Keep in mind though that a sound bar is not a replacement for a hi-fi full-fledged setup, but there are models that can cost more than £1,000. High-end models like these are jam-packed with high-end audio kits such as better audio tuning, advanced connectivity options and very powerful amplifiers.
Types of soundbars
Sounbar vs Sound base
The two main types are soundbar and sound base or pedestal soundbar. The most common design is a long thin bar speaker that has a subwoofer that’s either wireless or otherwise. It can be placed in front of your TV on the stand or wall-mounted. Its design is hassle-free but with some drawbacks like blocking the remote sensor of your TV.
A sound base on the other hand has a sleeker design and acts as your TV’s pedestal. The design has unfortunately fallen out of the radar since new TV models have changed its centralized pillar stand to feet located on both ends of the TV for safety reasons. This makes compact bases unsuitable for bigger TVs but sound bases can still be bought today to fit most 32-in TVs. Aside from limited availability, another drawback of a sound base is it lacks a separate subwoofer and does not produce the same deep bass quality that a traditional soundbar with subwoofers can offer.
Features to lookout for
- Good connections: One of the things you need to consider is how it will connect to your TV. Lookout for sound bars with at least one digital connector that can either be coaxial, HDMI or optical.
- Ease of use: Any sound bar that’s easy to use is a good long-term investment. Make sure the remote of the device is not fiddly as this often have buttons that are tiny and hard to press plus it can be easily lost. A sound bar remote with a built-in infra-red or IR is a good choice to avoid signal problem between your TV and the soundbar’s remote. Most soundbars today come with a LED display for adjusting sound settings and switching audio sources.
- Maximum volume and wide listening angles: Most soundbars have a so-called sweet spot. While this may seem like a good thing, it basically means that it will sound best on a certain sitting position, and once you move away from the device, the quality of the sound may deteriorate.
- Wireless connectivity: Numerous sound bars in the market today feature a Bluetooth connection. This is a good feature if you plan on using your soundbar a lot for listening to music without having to turn on your TV set.
- Design: Your sound bar should be designed really well or choose one with a well-thought out style that will not be a distraction on your TV set or décor. Lookout for sand bars with easy to reach buttons as well.
Some tips on choosing the right soundbar
What size should I get?
Soundbars come in many shapes and sizes, from less than a foot long to as tall as 4ft or even more. While larger ones often offer more drivers for bigger sound, often times you’re simply paying for a longer box. Keep in mind that a soundbar’s length does not directly correspond to your TV’s screen size.
Here’s a guide on soundbar and TV sizes:
- 12in – Any TV size
- 38 to 4in – 42 to 55in TV
- 50in – 55 t0 60in TV
- 60in – 70in TV
Another thing to remember is that, even if it’s by the same brand or manufacturer, your soundbar may not automatically work with your TV’s width. So ensure you’ve check the width of both models in its manufacturer’s spec section before purchasing.

Do I still need surround sound?
A two-channel sounbard don’t usually sound much different between surround modes and stereo, especially since in the first place they are not producing a true surround-sound experience. There are models with optional surround that sound great when playing movies. Many mid-range soundbars now has the ability to add surround speakers to existing bars. Brans like Samsung and LG offers this. They normally use WIFi when connecting to standalone wireless speakers. Keep in mind that this will add to the cost and can be a very expensive option.
Do I need the remote control that comes with my soundbar?
Almost all sandbars come with a remote, but they are usually not of good quality and numerous manufacturers rely instead on users to program their sounbars to respond to commands from the remote of their TVs. It’s not a bad idea but it can be problematic at times. Once you disable the internal speakers of your TV, some TVs will display an irritating message every time they receive volume remote commands, which typically happens when you’re using the remote of your TV to control your soundbar.
