The first steps in the creation of Toshiba happened between 1873 to 1890. Tanaka Seizo-sho of the Tanaka Engineering Works was one of the company's frontrunners. He was commissioned by Japan's Ministry of Engineering to develop telegraphic equipment. While in 1878, the first arc lamp of the country was developed by Ichisuke Fujioka. He then established the Hakunetsu-sha Co., Ltd. in 1890 and produce light bulbs in Japan. He later changed the name of his company to Tokyo Electric Company in 1899.
In 1921, Tokyo Electric Company developed the radio transmitter and invented the double-coil electric bulb. Tanaka Engineering Works, on the other hand, was the first company in Japan to develop electrical equipment.
During the 1930s the two companies held cross-shareholdings and decided to collaborate in numerous areas. And as the demand for technologically advanced appliances rose, the companies decided to merge in 1939 to form Tokyo Shibaura Denki or Tokyo Shibaura Electric Co., Ltd with a goal to become the world's biggest manufacturers of electrical machinery.
After World War II, the company focused on creating smaller electrical equipment instead of the heavy electrical machinery they supplied during the war such as vacuum tubes, radios, and other military supplies. As Japan's experienced post-war economic boom, its electronics and communications industries grew rapidly.
Toshiba began developing original technologies, producing novel products and expanded its current factories, as well as build new facilities to cater to the ever-growing consumer demands. It was during this period that the company's overseas sale started to rise gradually.
During the 1980s, Tokyo Shibaura Denki was officially replaced by the Toshiba abbreviation, and in 1983, Toshiba Corporation was adopted in English. In the 90s the company focused the resources on semiconductors and the expansion of the PC business in order to sustain their growth. And before the dawn of the new millennium, Toshiba launched the in-house company system, building eight in-house companies.
At the turn of the century, the company continued focusing on restructuring its businesses and targets up-and-coming businesses and growth sectors with an aim to still provide the world with the best and the first products and services combined with competitive prices.
Interesting facts about Toshiba
Are Toshiba TVs Any Good?
Sony, Samsung, LG, Panasonic, and Philips are the names dominating the TV market today. We're always on the lookout for deals on their top-rated products. However, if you're on a budget, and want a real bargain, you may be considering other brands out there.
When you look at the best-selling TVs on Amazon, you'll find Toshiba taking some of the top spots. Although the Japanese electronics giant played a big role in popularizing HD TVs, it had its own share of rocky times. However, it made a comeback on the market in recent years.
However, their smaller TVs are not as impressive though. The Toshiba TV 32 inch with a built-in DVD was not a big hit among consumers even if it comes with fantastic features like access to YouTube and Netflix among others, as well as HDMI inputs. The picture and sound quality performance were a bit underwhelming. But at its price point, this is a good choice if you want a TV with a DVD.
Not all TVs of Toshiba are cheap. As they joined the 4K bandwagon, they also launched their flagship of two OLEDs. Just like with Philips, the brand will use the OLED panels of LG's sister company, LG Display. This means that Toshiba's offerings can surely deliver vibrant colours and deep blacks that we love about OLEDs.
