Sainsbury's Launch Reusable Fruit & Veg Bags Made from Recycled Plastic Bottles
- Sainsbury’s has launched the 30p bags in a bid to fight plastic
- Customers can also bring their own containers into store
The war on plastic is still raging on, but one supermarket giant has made a big difference by rolling out reusable fruit and veg bags made from recycled plastic bottles.
As part of its commitment to to reduce plastic packaging by 50% by 2025, Sainsbury’s has launched a “programme to accelerate change”, which will involve introducing refillable packaging and switching to alternative materials.
Now, instead of using plastic produce bags for loose fruit and vegetables, customers can choose to either bring their own containers into store, or to buy a reusable drawstring bag made from 100% recycled materials for 30p.
Sainsbury’s has also launched water refill stations at hundreds of stores across the UK, and has also announced Reserve Vending Recycling trials which let customers return plastic bottles and drinks cans in exchange for coupons.
The bags were spotted by shopper Skye Ellie Goss, 20, a vegan from Eastbourne.
Skye, who runs vegan Instagram account @salsaguac, told LatestDeals.co.uk: “I absolutely love everything environmentally friendly and seeing these made me so happy! Seeing things like this is amazing. It’s a step in the right direction and best of all, it’s made from recycled bottles that would have ended up in landfill.”
Tom Church, co-founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, says: “We’re glad to see that Sainsbury’s is the latest big supermarket to embrace the plastic-free movement and provide real alternatives to plastic bags. When shopping in Sainsbury’s, don’t forget to use the newly-revamped Nectar loyalty scheme to make the most out of your shop - and check out the Sainsbury’s page on LatestDeals.co.uk for extra bargains, coupons and deals.
Also, from 1st October, Sainsbury's is following other big supermarkets and not offering the choice to add plastic bags with online deliveries:

Sainsbury’s were always forward thinking but I am so pleased they have come up with this idea I get more plastic covers from fruit and vegetables in my rubbish bin then anything else I shall shop even more with Sainsbury’s well done
Nice one, thanks for sharing! Well done Sainsbury's! Hope the other supermarkets will follow
Veg ,Bags are still plastic, irresponsible people will not reuse, whats up with supplying paper bags.and charging extra pence.
These bags are helluva useful! I spotted them in my local Sainsbury's, and after a quick inspection, I got the idea immediately, and bought a few. They are very durable, none has been punctured, and can even be used to keep snacks like crisps, nuts and cakes in - the mice and flies don't seem to be able to get through them! They are now used to carry small things around the flat, and will be very useful as shopping bags. They should scale them up so that I can fit a large amount of stuff in them - i.e. a carrier bag-full (may need a tougher drawstring, such as a pair of short grabstrings in the middle of the open top). Great discovery, and a huge step forward in reducing plastic waste. (By the way, Aldi are doing them as well!)
