Worlds fattest monkey dies after fed Junk food by irresponsible people

I dont know if anyone has ever been to Gibralter , but the guides advise people not to feed the barbary apes that live around the rock
One reason is they might attack you for your snacks, as i found out, and the second reason is junk food is not good for them
This is what happened to this macaque called ´Godzilla,´ nicknamed for being the fattest monkey in the world at 19 kg !
The problem is his staple diet was crabs, but shoppers at the market in Thailand constantly fed him chocolate and sugary drinks , and the owners were just as guilty too, leaving him chained up and feeding him more junk , while unable to excercise
He was only 6 when he died at the hospital, these monkeys can normally live to 30 years of age
But due to all the junk food he developed thyroid disease, diabetes, and Cushing's syndrome , all weight related , the latter stress related
Even fat camp was too late to save him
If this had happened here the owner would have been prosecuted
Should the owners have been punished ?

I feel my life has some parallels to this monkey. I really need to improve my diet.
BonzoBanana Don't we all B , this poor primate went from eating the equivalent of salads to burgers every day , no wonder he had a heart attack
Poor little guy.
His caretakers didn't take too much care of him to allow strangers to feed him junk. He was only 6 years old. 
RIP.
PhilipMarc I know P , they had him chained up at the market place so he couldn't run about , people obviously thought they were being kind feeding him, unfortunately they were giving him junk food
I think the owners should be prosecuted , they had no concern for the monkey, they were just using him as a magnet to attract customers to their stall to help sell their goods

If people don't take care of monkeys, don't have them chained up. Let them live in the jungle.
You mentioned Gibraltar, I do want to go there, maybe this year, but I'll be careful not to be robbed by them. 
PhilipMarc I have been twice P, the first time i was young and naive and didnt get any advice from the guides, so i was eating a sandwich and a huge one jumped on my back with its claws digging in , i managed to get it off with a few scratches minus the sandwich
The second time years later i knew what not to do and a guide held onto one while taking a picture with me and other tourists , a lot safer
When i sent the photos to my family they were asking me which one was the monkey 
I figure the legislation over ownership needs some serious updating here. If there is a level of local outcry at the ill treatment of this animal that amounted to it making their news then it is time for change. Every animal should have the right to be treated decently when they are taken on as the responsibility of people whether that be through ownership or care facility.
EmmaWright762 Totally agree E, but i am not sure they have the same level of care for animals in Thailand as we do , they are more interested how they taste than how they are as pets unfortunately
