£35k Fine for Refusing to Close Gift Card Shop during COVID Lockdown Overturned

In the News

At last, common sense prevailed and a judge overturned this massive fine on the couple who kept their shop open during covid restrictions

Its rich when Prosecutor Howard Leithead said the decision sends out the wrong message

What about those ongoing parties at number 10 , what message did that send out and the fact no action has been taken against the elite ?

Replying to this "What about those ongoing parties at number 10 , what message did that send out and the fact no action has been taken against the elite ?"

The, still under investigation, parties at no 10 - did not send out any message to these people who were failing to follow the in force regulations at the time they were fined, the ongoing wrong doings at number 10 were not alleged until much later.

I personally hope there is an appeal against their appeal being upheld, they are obviously a card and gift shop unlike W.H.Smith who are registered as news-agents. This type of incident probably cost many lives.

(I don't know why I'm bothering commenting POLITICAL posts are supposedly against chat guidelines)

They stocked household essentials as well so no law broken. Bread and butter items are a great way to secure other trade and make life easier overall for someone who just wants a mag and some milk . As for No 10 and all governments. Rules are often exoteric so bound by time and place. That to say the Leader's den is seldom the same one that the populace inhabit. Zelensky may walk with the crowd but I bet Putin isn't hanging out in the town centre waiting in a bread queue. Panem et Circenses eh? Image

Thanks M, just as i was thinking, no law broken albeit possibly bending the rules, which others bend to breaking point

I havent seen any £35,000 penalties thrown at people in office that have done far worse and betrayed the publics trust , and to them the fine would be a drop in the ocean

It was primarily a card and book shop (it says so on their sign) it doesn't even mention other things. Just more people thinking they've found some loophole in the regulations (regulations made to try to save lives),

One thing instilled on me from an early age was "Two wrongs don't make a right" so why was Number 10 even mentioned in this supposed discussion. It's still under investigation one could say it's sub-judicy so shouldn't even be discussed.

telmel There was too much of "bending the rules". If you have any EVIDENCE not known to the authorities. I suggest you contact them.

But I don't think condoning them will win you any friends from those who've lost people close to them because of those who "bent the rules" and don't condemn them.

Good that its been thrown out as if they are selling the same as WHSmith then it should have been either both open or both closed. Too be honest both of them should have been closed.

It is just annoying S where so many have gotten away with fines but the working man is never missed and has to pay

If it was across the board then it would be fairer

We had a garden centre locally that refused to close through the entire pandemic. My neighbour told me they were really busy. I'll have to see if they had any fines. Considering Boris Johnson own rule breaking though, personally I think all the fines should be scrapped with a large apology from him. It might help the courts catch up on more important issues to.

TC, the post is about a covid fine not politics, the reference is a comparison to two types of lawbreakers , one type happening to be in charge of the country
