Alexa
Ask a Question
Just got an Alexa, apart from the obvious questions about what the weather will be like etc, what do you use your Alexa for? Would love some tips on how your Alexa actually helps you and your family.
Mostly as an alarm clock or to play music, spelling is handy for the children and bed time stories. Good to call the children for a meal and turn lights off When they leave them on or want light to get into bed,
If you have smart plugs you can switch them on or off by voice command , similarly you can dim your smart bulbs you can dim them via Alexa voice command . I suppose you could plug all your energy eating Standby stuff ( tele , sky box , phone chargers , games consoles etc) into one extension fed by a smart plug then simply switch the lot of by one voice command to Alexa . This works direct if you have an Amazon Smart plug , with others you need a hub or an app .
Playing music mainly. It’s great at Christmas for the kids to call Santa. And just random facts.
You can sign up to Send Me A Sample and then just say “Send Me a Sample”. It will ask which one you want and I just say “What have you got?” and it will give you a list of what is available
For timers so the kids know when it’s time for bed and how long they have left on tablets and such.
Mine wakes us up and after music she tells us time and weather. Can send announcements between then and phone your alexa up using app.
We use ours for radio, listening to music, as a timer for cooking, reminders, switching on lights via the connected smart plugs (especially useful for Christmas lights). If you have more than one Alexas you can link them to create a sound system so music plays out of all the linked Alexas. You can also create routines, like one I use is "Alexa, let there be light" and all my lights (via smart plugs) switch on. Then when I go to bed, I say "Alexa, goodnight" and all the lights switch off.
A useful feature not mentioned so far is the "Find my Phone" one. When set up all you need to say, if you've mislaid your mobile or just want to check if it's working is "Alexa Find My Phone" and she'll call it for you. There is no charge for the service.
I use mine to remind myself of things to do and alarm clock and music. You can ask elexa to fart as well.
