Amazon Prime Video to Charge a "Bit" More for an Ad-Free Experience

In the News

I only ever sign up for the Prime trials every couple of months, but even then I just use it for faster delivery. Don't particularly like Prime Video's selection as it doesn't have movies/shows I'm interested.

Also, I use ad-blockers and hide element addons so I don't see ads and I don't pay a subscription for that. 😆

Just read that as well. If you become an eternal student you can dock the monthly subscription by half before you add on the extra...it's all so unnecessary though.

I've never paid for prime but have done free trials over various accounts and also don't find much to watch. Often the period of the free trial is enough for me to catch up on the few new shows on it. Looks like its £9 per month at the moment so about £108 per year or getting on £600 over 5 years. Of course if you are struggling with your credit card debt etc and can't pay off your card in full per month to avoid interest you can also make the case for all the compound interest on top year by year. I've just done a quick calculation and if your credit card has an apr of 30% then over 5 years you would be paying something like £1300 in total if your Amazon prime payments were made by borrowing on your credit card over 5 years.

I personally look around all online stores when making an online purchase and only find Amazon cheapest a small percentage of the time. A lot of Amazon stuff is ridiculously expensive like food purchases. Also many online stores offer cashback and/or points so becomes cheaper again than Amazon. Just don't see the point of prime at all.

We did sign up to prime once but didn't keep it long because, as you say, the films aren't the sort that we enjoy either. So, we only benefited from free delivery but we find that we don't mind waiting until we need the minimum £25. Surprisingly sometimes when we order 3 or 4 items to reach the £25 they then send them separately by royal mail?! Crazy!

A lot of sites are doing this charging to go add free. I don't bother to hide adds. It's not that much of a problem

Jerseydrew I hate ads I must admit. If I'm watching something I just want to watch that not have to keep clicking through ads or waiting for them to finish. However nowadays I use adblockers as much as possible and use smart tube next to watch youtube videos so I rarely see any ads at all even with the free services.

Sometimes I find stuff hidden away on youtube, maybe a film I like but its on youtube dubbed into a different language rather than english and I watch that with auto-translate on to english subtitles so I end up getting a little bit of foreign language teaching a long with watching the series or movie. I'd rather watch those than have the viewing experience constantly broken up with ads.

Jerseydrew Smart tube next is an android app so you can use it on android tvs, tablets, phones, android boxes, firesticks etc. However Amazon is now more actively working against such apps so maybe firestick will not be an option in the future. They maybe an ios version not sure I don't do iphones or ipads.

We've had prime a few times when they have a free 30 trial and never really watched it, all the good things on it you have to pay extra for

This is pretty common these days - also an excuse to increase the price. I'm not someone who would benefit from Prime as I think their video selection is poor and I'm OK waiting a while for deliveries.

I will keep Prime but wont bother to pay to remove the adverts. Id rather have this choice than have the fee just go up by couple quid anyway.
