Amazon Selling Bathroom Spy Cam Disguised as Clothes Hook, is This Right ?

Ask a Question

Amazon are being sued by in the US by an underage foreign exchange student in the US that was being spied on by someone using a secret camera disguised as a coat hook

This is just one of a number of objects that are sold with integrated spy cameras in them

Amazon tried to dismiss the case but it was allowed to go ahead

What is more troubling is that it is still being sold online both there and here along with other different types despite the lawsuit

I cannot see how they can be outlawed when there are so many variations and they are marketed as a security device

What is your opinion on this ?

Tempting eh.Not much worth filming in my house though .Only me stuffing my face with mentos and the cat playing with a carrier bag like a feline possesed.

MelissaLee1 That reminds me of the movie 'Me myself and irene', the scene in the supermarket with Jim Carrey where he finally loses it with people taking advantage of him all the time and now pushing in front of him at the till , a slightly different product though 😬

Even if this item was removed from Amazon there are lots of other disguised surveillance devices available elsewhere online. For example, in fake smoke alarms, plant pots and air fresheners. Something to consider if you're staying at an Airbnb.

telmel that is a sad state of affairs isn’t it. I agree they are available other places but I definitely think Amazon have some sort of responsibility to moderate what they sell.

jms19 The problem is everyone seems to be selling these J, ali express, temu , and lots of other retailers too , so unless a universal law was introduced they can never be stopped to be sold

And where do you draw the line, you have internal and external cameras for security , would they ban these too and where do you draw the line between security and intrusion ?

Its such a specific thing , very difficult to police

telmel i agree it is difficult to police, i just feel a company like amazon should take a moral stand on the issue. There are things which i agree could be used for security purposes but these spy cams are clearly to be used for bad things.

jms19 Totally agree J , just so difficult to implement

My biggest concern would be not just the perverts filming for their own twisted benefit but if someone was selling the footage on the internet , like the dark web

I believe there are some sick people out there that pay a lot of money for this type of thing

And this is an excellent example of why you should never stay in an AirBNB, there is always someone more interested in you than you think!

Items like this should be banned! I remember reading that a family on a cruise found a spy camera in their in their cabin.

In the one hand I understand for security issues but on the other there is an invasion of privacy if you are innocent. I think perhaps should be licensed or something with terms and conditions that only used in certain angles, field of vision where someone is not having privacy invaded. The bathroom is just wrong unless you are going to steal their gold taps or something.

If they are going to sue for this, why not all the others, you can buy spy cameras the size of your finger nail

No, it jolly well isn't. Would put me off ever staying in a hotel. Only a pervert would want one of these in their bathroom!

Just to play Devil's advocate. Not talking about one in the bathroom but spy cameras in general have helped to get evidence on abusive babysitters, care home workers, partners etc that otherwise might not have been obtained.

Personally I’m more concerned about the tiny cameras - 1cm x 1cm as they can be put literally anywhere - hidden in door frames etc where as there only so many places you can put a hook. I think maybe it was unfortunate that the advert showed it being in a bathroom
