Do You Ever Regret Asking Someone If They're Okay?

Ask a Question

Do you ever regret asking someone if they are ok and then they reel off all their illnesses. Or are you really interested? Do you wish you never asked and was only expecting a short answer and not their whole medical history.

What do you think of this?

Prior to 2020 I would be very selective in my choice of enquiry as there are people who just love to share - misery loves company! My opinion has adjusted because there must have been some very lonely people over the last 15 month who would've loved someone to talk to. I can't begin to understand their isolation and desperate need to talk to someone.

I completely understand your answer but not all talk has to be doom and gloom, I suffer from illnesses ( but not going into that), I love being cheered up and laughter.

eyeballkerry If it's any consolation, I can no longer watch anything sad or negative - there's too much change in the last year and I really need positive entertainment and conversation. I guess that makes me intolerant of constant negative commenting. Tbh anyone with constant pain or illness rarely share - hope you're coping with yours. x

sunny101 I am exactly the same, always looking for comedy shows on tv and always trying to a laugh with my family, although they say I am ‘weird’ quite a lot, lol.

Not even that, I rarely say good morning to people anymore. The amount of times I've got a long response explaining why it's not a good morning 🙄

It amuses me to hear people in the doctor’s waiting room ask ‘how are you?’ . Everyone replies ‘OK’!

I have one dear friend who is constantly going on about her health issues. She had a scare a few years ago so looks out for any skin changes. I admire her in so many ways so put up with it.

We should always ask . Sometimes that's all some people need to talk to someone . Its actually the first step to talking someone away from a potential tragic situation . You don't need to be a professional the first few minutes are essential then you can contact the professionals .

Pretty sure I wouldn't be any good at it (or maybe I could bore them to death 😮). But we are told just to engage and talk as apparently that is what many folks just yearn for .

Golfforall I totally agree with you. Lovely to know there still are people out there who care enough to ask and spend a little time to listen even if they cannot help to solve the problem!
