Should Assisted Dying Be Legalised?

In the News

I've been watching this on the news I believe it should definitely be for all those who wish to do so if they know they are not gonna get any better and in the right frame of mind

Totally agree Leanne , we wouldn’t expect a dog to just limp on but we expect some people to . I feel it should be legalised as a nurse human suffering is harrowing

Yes I agree it should for those people that are permanently suffering, it’s cruel. The government and other people against it argue that vulnerable people will be encouraged by unscrupulous people. This argument rumbles on with no solution so suffering continues.

Yes definitely. I have incurable cancer and dont want to be kept alive just for the sake of it. I want to be able to live too with a decent quality of life.

YES. Watching a loved one die slowly from dementia, cancer and other degenerative illnesses is so hard. I have told my kids if anything of this nature happens to me and it is not allowed in the UK then I will go and do it alone. Which is so wrong because when my dogs have been so ill and it was seen as cruel to prolong their lives, I had to allow them to be put to sleep so why not allow us as humans who can say what we want, be allowed to due with dignity. I for one will always vote for this to be brought in. I saw too many families wishing for their loved ones to die because of the suffering they saw and felt themselves because of their person anymore due to the illness. Yes we need restraints in place to make sure just anyone can get it done, because I do think it needs to be done with evidence but the person should be allowed to take a choice at the end of the day.

I think it should be only if the person who is requesting it is going to die anyway. A pain free death is what they want.

I don't think so. A lot of people sometimes say they wanna die and don't mean it. People can travel to Switzerland where they have it all down to a t, if that is their hearts desire when ill and in extreme pain.

nadinegregg70 what if they can't travel? What they have to stay and suffer? It's not right

nadinegregg70 I think most people know the difference as to whether they mean it or not and they should have to have a long chat with their doctor and family, then sign something which says they can back out at last moment. There are plenty of ways to safeguard.

Yes, we wouldn't allow animals to suffer so why humans.

Animals look to humans for their very survival though. There's no school for animals so they can't tell us anything. That's why we have vets, and doctors for humans. They won't legalise abortion, so why legalise euthanasia. Both means taking a life, so you legalise 1, then there ends up protests etc.

Leanne, I think doctors know in times like these and know mostly what to give. My mum cried in extreme pain with cancer from early morning. She was on a syringe driver as she had cancer. The Macmillan nurse was with her from early morning with a stronger dosage. But, she had to wait until lunchtime till the doctor came out to ok it. My mummy died around 10 oclock that night.

nadinegregg70 my mum died because doctors didn't listen to her so they don't know everything fact is it's down to that person who is ill knows full well they are never gonna get better so they should have the right to end their life how they want to

nadinegregg70 it might not be legal in Northern Ireland but they pay for ur return air travel r boat if u prefer to Liverpool, private taxi to and from the clinic etc so u can have an abortion. It might not be legal here but they still help you get 1 if u truly want 1

Very difficult/ sensitive subject this.

Generally I believe it to be a good thing but is it fair to put the final decsion on others and expect them to assist you, whether it be doctors friends or family members ? At what point is the right time? people often say things they don't mean when in pain or high on medication.

Mango4 obviously they will have to have things in place and it should only be for them who feel like they have no life because of disabilities or their illness can be cured

Defintely needs debating as people should have choice rather than endure pain when there is no hope of cure especially

I think assisted euthanasia should be allowed as long as no one feels their family are forcing them.

I think that as long as the person is of sound mind they should be allowed to make there own choice. It is something I would like to do when the time comes. Playong devils advocate I understand that theae things are not black & white as you could be feelong pressured but I would imagine this would be rare

Yep, it’s about time. Those with money are already able to do it, so it should be available for all

Yes! You wouldn't let an animal suffer but at the moment they will gladly let a person suffer and sometimes for an extremely long time, it's despicable that it isn't already legal.

No, no, no. Can you imagine a devious doctor or nurse or even your own next of kin bullying you to leave this earth before your time? Shame on anyone who could be so cruel to encourage this unacceptable behaviour or treatment.

jam45 seriously? Is that a joke fact is people have a choice and they should be allowed to have their say and if that means them dying the way they want to let them you do realise that it's not just one doctor or nurse who would have to be involved? They would have to go through a lot of things for the finale decision and it's for people who only have illnesses that can't be cured like some cancers

jam45 why on earth would a ‘devious doctor or nurse’ want someone to die ? If you are that close to the end of your life and in that much pain your organs aren’t likely to be useful to anyone. Doctors and nurses aren’t thick they would be able to tell if the person is being pushed into an early death by family hoping for an early request in their will. I would think 1 on 1 counselling would be mandatory.

I agree with most people here - it should be patent choice - with all the appropriate safeguards that can be put in place to ensure the patients fully understands and its their choice. Having watched my wife suffer with cancer and the treatment this was discussed within our family where we agreed that we would respect her wishes if the treatment failed. It didnt and she has made a full recovery, but at the end of the day it should be her choice and her choice alone.

Personally Ive thought for a long time that it should be legalised. I’m sure in most cases the people would do it themselves if they were able.

Why should someone be forced to endure a horrible life for the sake of it

I totally agree it should be available but needs a huge amount of safeguards. I certainly think also if a person is in immense pain but perhaps has limited mental ability, dementia etc then that choice should be done completely by doctors and perhaps family member or a third party possibly a legal representative. For those people without relatives who are seen as a nuisance and a financial burden to the state even if they have some quality of life we want to make sure we avoid a kill'em and grill-em mentality. We are becoming a much poorer country and we will have far less resources in the future so I feel there will be more pressure to end the lives of some people.

It's a difficult moral situation. As I've said before I personally would rather restore a death sentence for violent criminals rather than see innocent people suffer who are forced into long term care. We have to balance our resources and just don't see the point of keeping those alive who could never be safely released back into the community and are a horrific risk to children, women and anyone really.
