Australians Returning from India

In the News

Just read an article about Australians returning home from India. They could face up to 5 years in prison and a £37,000 fine due to the covid restrictions they currently have in place.

https://metro.co.uk/2021/05/01/australians-face-five-years-in-jail-and-37000-fine-if-they-return-from-india-14504833/?ito=article.tablet.share.top.link

Quite a contrast to what happened here in the UK as Australian doesn’t seem to be offering safe quarantine provisions.

Do you think it’s harsh? Racist? Breaches any human rights?

Racist? No.

They're temporarily banning people from their own country and that shouldn't be permitted since they have the right to live there.

Speaking of human rights, UNESCO published this: "Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights"

https://en.unesco.org/themes/ethics-science-and-technology/bioethics-and-human-rights

Surprisingly, not many are aware of it and I downloaded a PDF to keep it offline as a backup.

P.S. Thanks for not using a BBC link.

PhilipMarc it’s certainly an interesting topic atm. Not all rights are absolute. Some are qualified and can be overruled in certain circumstances for a legitimate aim.

Curious re: BBC comment. Any particular reason?

I’m surprised you say there’s no quarantine in Australia because some friends intended to go for Christmas and were told they would have to be quarantined in a hotel at their own expense.

Pjran I said there doesn’t seem to be quarantine provisions (for returning Australians). Perhaps I have misunderstood the article as there was an paragraph in it :

‘The government does not make these decisions lightly,’ Health Minister Greg Hunt said in a statement. ‘However, it is critical the integrity of the Australian public health and quarantine systems is protected and the number of Covid-19 cases in quarantine facilities is reduced to a manageable level.’

Happy to be corrected. This article relates to Australians returning from India. No idea re: visitors/tourists. Things change so quickly all the time now re: covid situation.
