Beware of the Ritz Afternoon Tea Scammers

In the News

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-53793922

Diners at the luxury Ritz hotel in London have been targeted by "extremely convincing" scammers who posed as hotel staff to steal payment card details.

It’s definitely a very specific kind of scam, the kind where the details of customers have leaked - especially as ‘scammers knew exactly when and where her reservation was’

So if you’ve got a booking of any sort, this kind of scam is doing the rounds

I'd imagine if the Ritz was taking part in the eat out to help out campaign, they would have quite a high number of reservations for the scammer to intercept

Unrelated, but another scam to watch out for. I was walking in Camden the other day and as I passed a homeless person begging in the street I accidentally kicked his money collection pot. This is usually a scam to make people feel very guilty and many will feel obliged to hand over some cash to make amends. They will use a transparent cup/tub containing some low value loose change and place it towards the middle of the pavement. The clear cup makes it more difficult for pedestrians to spot.

I’ve seen these kind of scams abroad. They usually take place in busy tourist hotspots. Unfortunately a lot of tourists do get caught out by it, so it’s definitely becoming a more commonplace 🙁
