Now Broadband Provider Blocking This Site for Me
Ask a Question
Hi all can anyone help. My Now broadband provider is blocking my entry to Deals/Competions on Latestdeals saying Threats and Malware detected, I have not changed any settings. Is anyone else having a similar problem. Any advice much appreciated
Sky is blocking some links too, hit and miss but blocking quite a few!!
Is reported as phishing/malware to a few broadband companies it seems.
Can't view so many deals now as I can't click the links as they go to a blocked page.
Edit:
Figured it out that it is the referral/redirect links that are doing it. The site that you use (viglink) to redirect links is getting blocked by different broadband companies
This will affect many people.
update 24/4
For sky email MySky@sky.uk to report viglink.com wrongly being blocked.
Many thanks ukheather. Not sure what to do about it, if anything, don't think it will be wise to disable anything. Guess I will just have to try entering comps and see if it will let me enter or block. All the best
Many thanks, I will email customer services a NOW Broadband but they are not usually very quick at getting back if you have a problem so I will not hold my breath. I will let you know how I get on
Hi guys Sorry about this - I believe the domain name being incorrectly flagged by filters is "viglink.com".
It isn't a domain we control (it's owned/run by a legitimate affiliate network) so the best we can do is report it to the broadband providers as a mistake. Hopefully the more people that do it the sooner they'll look into it and remove the block.
I've also tweaked some things on Latest Deals to try and avoid links going via that domain where possible so hopefully the issue crops up less frequently
Yep that is what I said above that viglink is the site being blocked but it is blocked by a lot of providers now as it is symantec that blocks it.
I contacted sky who said it is symantec that they use and many other providers use that is blocking it
More people need to report it as wrongly blocked as otherwise they may not remove the block.
MySky@sky.uk is the email to report it to for sky.
Hey everyone, a little workaround is to use your 4G assuming it's not the same company as your broadband.
Go direct to the website via a separate tab / internet browser instead of clicking the link on here for now.
Yes I had been considering doing that, I managed to enter one competition, from the link on here, last night so I will see how it goes - trial and error for now. Good Luck
ukheather Yes it does work. You've misunderstood. I mean go to the deal or competition website directly. It's hard to explain if you don't understand how the referral tracking works on here. VigLink acts as a middleman so when you click their link on here, they track it so Latest Deals can be paid their commission. It then automatically redirects to the website you are ultimately trying to get to eg. GreatCompetions.com. If you go to a web browser and go to GreatCompetitions.com directly, you are cutting out that middleman and therefore the problem. The only loss in that situation is for Latest Deals because your visit to the site is not tracked so they don't get their commission.
ukheather You don't use viglink. You bypass them. That's my point so not sure you are understanding me. If you tell me a post that isn't working, I will send tell you the link to view it without viglink. It's not just a case of opening a new window / tab at all. It also has nothing to do with the browser or device.
ukheather You can get round the ISP blocking links as well if you use a VPN. Many have a free option up to a certain amount of data so you can just switch it on to visit blocked sites and off again when you don't need it. Windscribe is a good one with 10GB a month for free. That's plenty just to visit the odd blocked website.
I'll explain the solution to this again as some people are not getting it. If you click a link on this site, it automatically goes via a referal tracker eg. VigLink. If your broadband provider is blocking them, you can get round it by going to the ORIGINAL web address of the site in question. If you just open the link from here in a new tab, it will still go via VigLink. You need to either go to the website by typing the address of it manually in a new window or tab or via a Google search. Copying the link from here will simply send you to VigLink.
For example:
The deal for 48 Fruit Polos was going via VigLink. It's not now but let's just say it still is for the sake of this example. If I copy the URL from here, it actually goes via some code built into Latest Deals that then takes you to VigLink briefly and finally redirects to Yankee Bundles. To avoid that, you just need to visit the Yankee Bundles website directly so via a Google search or by typing the address into your browser. Dead simple!
before I thought you meant opening In a new tab or something which obv didn’t work, I miss read then.
but what I’m saying is some deals you have no idea what the link is though, i saw one yesterday was supposed to be a free meal so would have been a unique url. Going direct to the companies website doesnt help you find the deal in this case as it’s not shown on the website and must have been a special link which are often hidden from clear view unless you have the url.
as I said anyway latest deals have tried to avoid using viglink where possible to avoid the issue
you can’t always just go direct to a website to find the deal, but either way the site needs unlocking and the real fix is reporting it as false blocked which actually solves the issue
Now managing to enter competitions as normal not sure what has changed but thanks to whoever fix it
Dennab Thanks - certainly not intentional! Was surprisingly tricky to fix but think I managed it this weekend. Hopefully an updated version of the app will be available in app stores in the next few days (depends how long Apple and Google take to review updates at the moment!)
I've had confirmation from symantec that viglink should now be removed from their block list. Unfortunately I'm not able to test it myself but please shout if people are still having issues. Thanks
Kelsey I can now see the viglink.com website directly so the problem appears to have been fixed. Cheers.
