Calgon prevents limescale in Washing Machines...waste of money?
Ask a Question
Calgon is a waste of your money! ... Which has run an extended experiment simulating three years use and have concluded that, although the product did prevent the build–up of limescale, "the small layer that built up in Calgon's absence was not sufficient to affect performance or suggest future failure".
I didn't know this before. I've been using it for years!
Anyone else?
I don’t use them never have every 3 months 2 dish washer tablets on hot wash I use a lot cheaper
I was genuinely shocked and disappointed to hear this news!
The dishwasher tablets sound like a good idea. Do you put 2 tablets inside the drum and run a empty hot cycle ? How hot?
Thankyou for the information. I bought some Calgon ages ago but keep forgetting to use it. I won’t buy any more!
I have never used it. I bought a cheap version from Lidl the other week which I'm going to try and if it doesn't work I haven't lost much. I will also be giving the dishwasher tablet trick a try
I live in hard water area, so limescale is a big issue. I used to use white vinegar once a month to help with this problem but now use calagon which I think helps to eliminate smells in my washing machine, nicer smelling than vinegar.
beccatavender I've always used Calvin so never noticed bad smell issues to be honest. I guess its been doing some good then!!
I use a similar product as recommended by Hotpoint in our washing machine as we are in a very hard water area and it definitely makes a huge difference!
TractorGirl327 I'm also living in a hard water area hence thought I was taking care of my washing machine! What's the product that you use?
SAdeals One sachet a month on the hottest cycle. They recommend with an empty drum but I do sometimes put my kitchen dishcloths in!!

I’ve never used it myself, i have bought a cheaper Aldi washing machine cleaner but only used it a couple of times in the 6 years we’ve had the machine. I bleach my shower curtain once in a while and hot washes for towels seems to do enough
Someone suggested to us to put a splash of white vinegar instead of fabric conditioner. It reduces limescale build up.
Six months after we moved in, with a brand new washing machine, the machine broke, we called an engineer and he found that the heating element was kaput! Since then we have used a product recommended by Indesit each month in both the washing machine and dishwasher and have had no problems since and we are 18 months down the line from that incident. We buy the stuff cheaper through ebay now.
