Call Your Animal a 'Companion' Instead of a Pet
In the News
I understand what the PETA chief is getting at, but really?
I guess the likes of ‘Pets at home’ ought to change their name!
Hi thanks for sharing this information don’t you reckon these two words 'sweetie' or 'honey' we use in our lives - Pet should be called with there names i don’t know lets see what people will comments about this question
The word pet comes from the scottish Gaelic word peata, which means tame animal, so nothing derogatory about that. Plus I think it is extreme to compare us using the word pet as to how women were treated before feminism.
My dog is treated like a second child in our house.
Wow, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. When my pets, get up, get dressed and toddle off to work I may call them companion, partner etc but until then they will remain much loved pets. Called by their names, also fur babies, darling and little ****s when they've wrecked something. Surely the emphasis should be on how we treat our pets not how they are collectively known?
I agree. My cats are indeed my fur babies, but obviously I do refer to them as my pets, but the words only convey a fraction of the affection I have for them.
I call Miss Tizzy Princess most of the time. She is my little furry Princess and I love her very much. I don't think of her as a pet; she's my buddy. I don't think of my goldfish of a pet either; he's Rory boy. Peta get on my nerves. I always think they need to go take a chill pill.
I agree. They lose credibility when they make such statements, like people need to be policed by them in how to treat animals. People don’t respond well when someone is wagging a finger at them
Our dog is often told that she was the first baby. She is a member of the family and I don't tell people that we have a pet, I always say we have a dog at home. Next it will be I can't call her a dog because it undermines her or something! Peta annoy me.
hspexy They do some good work and I believe animal welfare is important but they always end up going too far. As for Miss Tizzy, well, I'm sat on the floor typing this as she is in my chair fast asleep and I can't wake her up, so I'm going to be working on the floor all afternoon until she decided its time to get up.
hspexy my cat (also my furry baby) is now almost 13,but hes still very lively(inbetween bouts of sleeping) so hes very interactive,i often sit & play with him as hes got some toys that dangle on a stick, and he loves to play with his catnip mice when i throw them for him, and little plastic golf balls. He also likes a 'chat' but likes to get the last meow in!
