Are Cancer Charities Doing Enough to Help Eliminate the Disease ?

Ask a Question

I sat here thinking about this today after reading about how the UK is lagging behind other countries concerning cancer treatments and studies, i have posted the article below

Ok the charities are not to blame for this, they do a fantastic job , but are they doing enough to eliminate the disease completely ?

Vast amounts are donated to cancer charities each year specifically for this reason , to find a cure

But if they do find a cure for all cancers, which is a big ask , what happens to the charities ?

They will not be needed of course and many people will lose their jobs and more specifically the directors their massive incomes

At the end of the day they are a business , a niche one as it concerns saving lives, but one all the same

Its the same with the pharmaceuticals, they earn vast amounts from their businesses , of course they have to pay for the studies they have invested in , but do they want a one cures all tablet ?

No, they need medicine that people take daily and that they can keep producing and selling

I know it sounds unethical but do you think they possibly could hold back finding an outright cure because of this ?

I sincerely hope not

It would be interesting to hear anyones opinion on this

Yes, cancer charities are doing more than enough to eliminate cancer. Thanks to many, many years of researches cancer can now be easily identified and treatment begins soon. I know of neighbours, colleagues and relatives who have had cancer treatments and is still alive. But I also know of many sadly the cancer treatment didn't work for them.

It's hard tho coz there so many different cancers out there that they will never find a cure I don't even know why these charities are even around should be funded by the government

There will always be the need for the research as there isnt really a single disease called cancer - it has so many forms that I doubt we will ever fully 'cure' it. The pharmaceuticals will continue to invest heavily and I am sure will continue to make a lot of money from medicines as there can never be a single cure all tablet for cancer - we cant manage that for headaches or runny noses!

Cancer treatment has come on leaps and bounds in the past decade alone. My mum died of cancer over ten years ago- i now have cancer and the treatment- of me as a person as well as the medical advances are worlds apart. But yes - there are so many different cancers that it wouldn’t be a one cure fits everyone.

suevernon1968 I did read an article a while back that suggested in the near future all cancers could be eliminated, they just need to find the 'magic bullet'

Cancer cells mutate and if the mutations can be stopped then cancer growth stops

So there is hope for everyone soon , i wish you a speedy recovery S

telmel we need a magic bullet for so many things in this world at the moment. To be honest I don’t ever think they will find a cure. My cancer is incurable but I have treatment every three weeks to stop the tumours i have from growing or multiplying. I lead a good quality of life with no nasty side effects from the treatment- apart from the low immune system. But ten years ago people with the same cancer as me rarely survived 2 or three years. I’ve been on this treatment for 5 years now. Cancer cells do mutate but they all do it so differently. Sometimes its our fault we get cancer sometimes its just bad luck. X

suevernon1968 So sorry to hear how it is affecting you S , i hope something new comes along soon to cure this

Here is an article i found from last year on how fast scientists are advancing to find cures for the incurable

It does give hope , the government just needs to invest more on research

suevernon1968 I am really pleased that you are still alive and I am hoping its down to the advanced cancer knowledge from the researchers, consultants or whoever. Keep up the healthy eating and lifestyle. Best of luck Sue.

Lost so many family members to cancer in the last ten years, so no enough isn't being done, but will they ever cure it? Not in my life time that's for sure

It's all genetics, unlock them and cancer would be eliminated, 5 family members have died of lung cancer, none of them ever smoked or worked in hazardous conditions

martinlufc5637 Yes genetics play a big part M, but it is also the world around us and the foods we eat that are a factor too

Pollution is everywhere and foods are pumped full of chemicals and preservatives

I suspect this is why cancers are more predominent now than years ago when the world was a healthier place to live in

martinlufc5637 if that many of your family have had lung cancer then you can actually be tested to see if it’s hereditary.

Some cancers are caused by lifestyle though. Sadly my mum liked her drink way too much and died of bowel cancer.

There are loads of different breast cancers alone - mine is classed as HER2 which is hormone driven and I had completely different treatment to a friend I made in the cancer unit who had something like triple negative breast cancer. Its mind blowing how many different sorts if breast cancer there are.

telmel also as years have gone by cancers - specially the slow growing tumours - are found much earlier than before so people are surviving much longer which automatically looks like a huge rise in cancers. But I do remember when the adverts used to say it affect one in three people- now its one in two.

suevernon1968 Its a double edged sword situation S, technology is giving us earlier detection and better treatments , but lifestyle and pollutants are causing an increase

I guess this is the worry about charities really. Is everyone involved with them doing it for altruistic reasons or are some only in it for the money.

I think in recent years a lot of people have lost some trust in charities

I take a very cynically view on this. these charities existed since the 70's as I know off and then research for a cure ass been ongoing before that .Even though there has been many advancements in treatments and cancer care since then cancer still exists. I believe as it is multi billion dollar industry for drugs companies, just like the common cold no actual cure will ever be forthcoming.

Mango4 That's my view also M, i wish it wasn't

Its like fuel , people say someone once discovered a way for cars to run on water , probably similar to hydrogen fuel but supposedly a lot more simpler

But it never materialised , there were a lot of conspiracy theories that the person was paid off by the oil companies etc, which could have been true

Now we have EVs, but they are so expensive and becoming more costly by the day with energy prices rocketing and new taxes being put in place to make up for the loss of oil revenue in the future , as well as proposed road tolls , they will never be a real threat to the big oil companies , at the moment, besides they can re invest their profits in EV technology to balance the loss

So who is to say the pharmaceuticals are not holding back on a total cure for cancer to prevent a big dent in their ongoing profits ?

telmel there will always be a conspiracy or other about virtually anything that humans discuss. But withholding medical cures when the companies could charge so much for it ? Something as big as that would have been found out by now - whispers and rumours.

suevernon1968 I really hope it doesn't happen S but we would probably never get to find out

They operate behind closed doors , and you only hear about the drugs that are approved for release

Look what happened in China with covid, nobody knew about the experiments going on there , even though they deny it to this day and blame the wet markets and bats 🙄

telmel it’s certainly a very odd world. Look how quickly a vaccine was found for covid - I seem to remember only one of the vaccines caused problems in some people. But didnt we stand on the shoulders of the scientists who had worked on SARS for that one. My cancer treatment used to take 3 hours by cannula every three weeks- medical research now means it takes about 10 minutes by sub cutaneous infection (into the fat of my thigh lol) and the new one is less than a quarter of the cost of the old treatment- so some drugs are released that means the drugs companies lose money.
