Care Assistant - Interview Advice

Ask a Question

I've applied for a Care Assistant role at a local nursing home and I have a telephone interview this week; I don't have any experience in the industry but I'm more than willing to knuckle down, do the training and take on board what I learn.

I'm looking for any preparation/interview advice that you have please, one thing that I've thought of is to think about relevant skills that I'm using in my current job (and explain how I use them) i.e. teamwork and communication skills.

Thanks.

You'll be asked likely about emergency situations that you've been in? How you responded/or how you would respond to certain situations. You may also be described a potential scenario with a colleague & asked how you would respond when / if youd report it.

Standard questions include

Why should we hire you?

Why do you want the job?

What are your strengths?

What are your weaknesses?

And at the end of the interview, Do you have any questions for us?

Write down your (bullet point) answers to these and other questions now and put them on post-it notes on your wall next to the phone. Practice answering in front of the mirror (trying not to refer to your notes).

At the end of the interview, if you want the job, be sure to ask for it!

Good luck!

There are some great replies here. I would say it's a good idea to look up about the policies, values and activities etc. It will help when you are asked why you wish to work there. If you've have attended any training courses at work such as health and safety, manual handling, cpr etc you could mention this. Wishing you lots of good luck.

MartinBluck One more question that trips people up and it's a cruel one when you're not prepared.

'What would you tell your younger self?'

suggested response - 'Go for it! Failure isn't the opposite of success, it's what happens when you're trying to do the things that you haven't yet mastered'

Good luck with the interview.

First of all, I respect you for going for a job in caring at this very unfortunate time, the care home will be very lucky to have you. Last time I went for a similar job all I had was life experience. I was honest, maybe too honest, let my personality show and somehow got the job. I wish you the best and make sure it is right for you. Just remember they need you more than you need them.
