Chickens

Ask a Question

Did anybody manage to get chickens before lockdown. If this was new to you are you enjoying it. Is it worth it to have fresh eggs or do you now regret it as eggs are now readily available?

If people bought chickens just because of lockdown, they should be made to look after them properly.

Chickens are more work than a lot of people think, they need looking after 365 days a year. The eggs may be fresher and taste better but they seldom work out cheaper. Hens lay 1 egg per day 5 out of 7 days and need to be fed layers pellets (to help produce eggs), corn, fresh water and fresh grass or greens (ours used to get grass clippings, no more than 1 box per grass cut and in the winter cabbage leaves or uncooked green leftovers).

This week Morrisons were selling reduced eggs!

I also heard they have to be innoculated and have health inspections etc and can spread bad diseases if not looked after properly, am I right lilyflower or did I dream that lol ?

Lynibis Egg farmers have to inoculate the hens, this is done through the drinking water. We never inoculated our after getting them from the egg farmer (they were 18month old and 'past' their laying best). A vet will inoculate your hens (expensive). Disease is normally spread by not cleaning out hen coop, drinking/feed trays and leaving food around for the rats.
