Children's Names - Why Did You Choose It

Ask a Question

My sister is a teacher and comes across some unusual and different names. I've head Porsha, Mercedes and Tyler recently. I don't work with children but have come across young adults with small children and there was a phase of names beginning with K such as Kyle, Kaiden, Kaiser, Kai and others and now the name May seems to be popular but spelt Mae, Mai and Maya and names like Molly-Mae, Millie-Mae, Ruby-Mae and others.

I'm sure Love Island has some influence but what name did you give your kids and why?

We gave our little girls name Aurabella (Aura as we are spiritual) Bella as it means beautiful.

rararachel I hadn’t either so was pleasantly surprised when she named her Kadie. Her friend had a baby boy a few Months ago and named him Kaden which is nice too and again unusual for where we live.

Our son is called Scott. He was named after family tradition. The first born son gets his Dads name middle as their first name. My husband was named for his dads middle name and so was our son. My mother in law picked my husbands middle name so she was very touched that we followed the family tradition.

rararachel I know a few 'Holly's' and know I wouldn't choose it. Names are very interesting though, I once heard of a Zebedee (not the magic roundabout one!) I'm sure having an unusual name must give you character as you stand out a mile! 🐞

I’m interested in this... I’m currently pregnant with a boy - we were 100% set on a girls name, based on just loving the name and not having any negative associations with it... but we can’t decide between 2 boys names.. my partner prefers one and I prefer the other.. I have no idea how you’re meant to decide!

Give him both. Pull one out the hat. Imagine him with the name as an old man. Can one be shortened, if so is that version acceptable. Both of you make a new list, swop you then cross off what you don't like and what's left put in the hat? Decide before you/partner register him, my ex went while I was in hospital - both kids got names he preferred!

Also give some consideration to what the initials would spell (Think of Val Doonican!) 🐞

My given birthname is somewhat unusual in the way it is spelt & is often pronounced wrongly. So I now use the traditional spelling to avoid the headache. My sons both have traditional names, My mum choose my eldest sons name & her mum choose my brothers name. If I'd had a girl I would have chosen Melissa.

We called our son Cian just because I liked the name and it was the one name we agreed on. If I was having a girl it would have been Calina

I had a boy back in 2002 and chose the name Blake this was taken from Ronald Dahl’s book illustrators Surname -Sir Quentin Blake... My daughter born in 2011 is called Tia as I liked the name Mia but my friend had her daughter before me and called her Mia which I had chosen as a possibility but as she beat me to it I changed it to Tia instead lol
