Covid Scientists Barbie Doll is an Antidote to Stereotypes

In the News

Barbie has clearly been doing her homework. The latest reincarnation of the toy doll will appear in the inspirational form of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine co-creator Professor Dame Sarah Gilbert, in a attempt to encourage girls to consider careers in science.

The toy company Mattel has created a Barbie doll in honour of Gilbert, who led the Oxford University team that developed the life-saving vaccine in record time.

Whilst I appreciate the argument that Barbie dolls can potentially give girls a distorted view of the female form, it is just a toy! Providing children are given a range of toys to play with and aren’t gender stereotyped, I don’t believe the dolls are harmful. They have come a long away in recent years and have dolls representing different shapes, colours and disabilities. It is a good thing that a strong female role model is represented in this way.

This is really just clever marketing more than anything, but if it does help then great. It also does help promote the work of these women and that can maybe influence others who are thinking of working in the sciences.
