Dark Cloud over the Valleys Today 54 Years
In the News
Today marks the 54th anniversary of the devastating disaster in Aberfan South Wales.
The Aberfan disaster was the catastrophic collapse of a colliery spoil tip in Wales on 21 October 1966. The tip had been created on a mountain slope above the village of Aberfan, near Merthyr Tydfil, and overlaid a natural spring.

Sad day, I only learnt of this after watching the Crown TV series - I think it was recorded and acted very well, it must have been heart breaking for a village to loose a generation
For someone who lived in the valleys all my life this was always a day to remember not seen that program may have to watch
I remember this event as I was a young teen of 13, it was heartbreaking. When I watched it portrayed in The Crown I was disgusted by the Queen's reaction but surprised at Philips. I am hoping it was portrayed wrongly but there were so many things that brought shame on the royals surely they would have sued if they had been untrue?I
Ann1984 it is a fantastic series but be warned you have to watch carefully and listen to the dialogue. Easy for me as I remember lots of it but from 1952 to 1990 will probably be an eye opener to you.
I have been a staunch royalist all my life, but no longer.
Ann1984 I felt the same and didn't watch until very recently, all 3 series in a huge binge.
According to the programme she said 'royalty visit hospitals not accidents' and twice refused to go when asked.
I don't know what to think but as she admitted it was one of her greatest regrets she must know she did something wrong.
I prefer The Queen's reason she didn't go to Aberfan straight away, she was worried that because of her visit rescue operations might be scaled back to cope with her visit and that some poor child still alive in the debris might be missed.
What a day of sadness for Aberfan. It must have been devastating.
I was aware of this catastrophic event but, like Gems, experienced it with new eyes thanks to the Crown episode, which covered it.
My thoughts are with Aberfan and Wales today.
