Just read this article, about riders striking over pay and conditions they say they earn less than minimum wage. So, the date will help bring attention to their cause.
I dont use either if these apps, so it wont effect me, what about you?
I don't understand about them striking over low wages. All the side hustlers I read about boasts about the fantastic pay and tips.

It won't affect me either but these jobs I always thought of as side hustles, moonlighting, not as regular jobs, but then again I wouldn't want to do it. Trouble is, in a service industry with several layers, the food cooked and delivery thereof, the amount is always passed to customer who then no longer buys. I used to treat myself to a takeaway for £14 or less all in. Now with food, delivery and service charge it is nearer £20 and often minimum order is £20+ so I no longer have the occasional treat, single people miss out on everything that is designed for couples and families. Hey ho, c'est la vie.
Lynibis Even as a couple we very rarely have a take aways. We sometimes get a Dine In offer, but again they have gotten a little more expensive and rarely include a bottle of wine, which they used to in the past.
Both these companies are not that old, so I would hope people would still remember how to go and get their own food.
I fear they are shooting themselves in the foot.
No effect on me as I don't takeaway period but it's a good idea to do this on such a popular date.
Won't affect me as I don't use either of these companies and we don't celebrate valentines day. I'm sure it will affect some people but other companies will benefit too.
Ain't they all self employed tho? So they have to get loads of deliveries to make a wage if it's that bad I'm sure there are other jobs out there
Deleted their apps ages ago, got fed up of cold food missing items or someone else's order
martinlufc5637 My dad told me he saw a food app delivery driver take food from a box, then close it again, and then went to deliver it.
I guess not every restaurant uses sealing stickers so scummy drivers do this.
I personally don't like using these kind of apps, I'd rather buy it myself or make something at home.
PhilipMarc yeah we make our own now, and your probably right about them dipping in the bags, always fries and a drink missing
I think as well as ebay and online sellers now gig economy courier companies like these have to report earnings to the government and strangely weren't doing this before so faced with tax on top I guess many of these people would be under the minimum wage especially with tax liabilities.
I personally don't agree with the striking mentality generally but have seen some videos on youtube where its clear earnings are reducing. It's one thing to strike for more money especially when a firm is in a damaged financial state and could destroy the company and another when they are making good money but reducing the wages of people basically. It's not like train drivers who can earn up to £90k and on average earn about £60k striking which seems completely unreasonable to me, in fact I think they are far too highly paid for the skill required, more than most doctors.
The minimum wage is good on many levels but it has increased the amount of volunteers working for charities as charities can't pay a sub minimum wage to people. Some people might like to work for a charity for a few hours at maybe £4 an hour just so all their expenses are paid. It seems the only way you can legally pay someone less than the minimum wage is self-employment like these gig economy couriers.
