Feedback Please - Broadband Price Comparison

Latest Deals

Hola chicos & chicas!

It's Easter weekend on lockdown which of course means I've been doing what I love most... comparing prices!

Image

I'm writing to ask for your feedback on this Google Sheet we have created. It looks at 16 broadband providers and all their publicly available plans (i.e. on the website, not exclusive to other partners, and broadband only, not TV packages etc.).

Features

  • 16 broadband providers - can you think of more? Please shout
  • Download speed
  • Contract length
  • Factors like Line Rental, Postage, Activation Fee

Then I've made a Total Price (Per MB/s) which tries to work out the relative value of each package based on speed (and taking into account the extra fees etc.).

Averages

I also included the average prices / download speeds of the lot, so you can see if the plan you're interested in is above average or below average.

My favourites are highlighted in green.

Default Sorting is by Monthly Contract but you can of course sort it any way you like. Just highlight Row 3, press the sort icon and do as you please.

Anyway, looking to get your feedback - mistakes, extra info required, general thoughts!

Any comments would be appreciated to help make it better as I intend to keep this updated.

If you think it's useful and want to share with a friend, send them this link:

BuffSkunk Sky Broadband is the thirteenth on the list.

(about two thirds down) It is a little difficult to see.

It's SIXTEEN on the list obtained by clicking the link,

I don't think your top pick (Virgin Media) is taking into account that all the others (including VodaPhone) provide a landline as part of their price, to the best of my knowledge Virgin Media which is supplied via fibre optic, is the only major provider that doesn't supply telephone as part of their package. I believe they charge an extra £17 a month for it.

This might explain better than I can: https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Forum-Archive/Line-Rental/td-p/3906746

I don't envy you the task of compiling the list - it's a total minefield trying to find the best value.

Hey, if you only want broadband and don’t have a need for a home phone, then you can buy Virgin Media Broadband without a line rental. They are the only operator other than BT to have their own cables, so no line rental required.

If you want a home phone as well as broadband, then yes, you have to pay extra.

Tom That is my point most people want a phone other than their mobile, so have to pay £17 more for one, (so it doesn't truly reflect the cost), It might seem hard to believe but there are some of the lower speed broadband packages (including landline) that cost less than usual line rental, so those who need a landline may as well take out a broadband package and not use the broadband, ☺

I personally use a landline for incoming calls and freephone numbers, and pay as you go mobile at 1p a minute for outgoing calls.

Maybe you should factor in cashback from Quidco/Topcashback?

I know it's not guaranteed, but it's always something that I look for when switching.
