Feel the Need to Take Kids out Every Day of the Half Term?

Other

I see a lot of my friends post on Facebook taking children out everyday. When I was growing up we used to go on a day out as a treat not an expectation.

Yes agree. And whilst I know I should not criticise i think a lot is lazy parenting: It is easier to keep the house clean and tidy if the kids are out of it and getting worn out in the soft play areas that seem to have sprung up everywhere.

I love doing cooking with my grandson, just started with actual meals rather than cakes etc. We made lasagne on Tuesday. We also do his homework, make tents in the garden (summer), plant seeds, do quizzes and puzzles which are educational (but he hasn't twigged yet).

Our outings are occasional trips to cinema or bowling as a treat but he actually prefers the other pastimes. We are lucky to live by the sea so shell hunting is another free pastime with maybe an ice cream when we stroll along the Prom.

He also loves walking to the end of the pier and back which is really cheap.

Think your right definitely easier to keep the house clean if not in it!! I really want my children to value a day out and not just expect it. Your grandson is lucky to have someone teach him how to cook when I bet my husband he could only cook fried eggs and super noodles!!

MumOfThree well his dad, my son, used to be a chef way back but is now in commercial property. He works very hard and although he still shares the cooking with his wife there is never time to actually teach. On weekends they take him to his footie club and family visits. Also, I think sometimes kids pay more attention to grandparents. Next time we are going to do home made beefburgers! Shepherd's pie, quiche, as I want him to look after himself if he lives alone as an adult or goes to uni.

When I was a child school holidays were spent "playing out" with other children. I think we'd have resented having to do what adults wanted to do. (and wanted us to do).

The world seems to have changed - perhaps not for the better for many children.

We used to play out in the street but I don't feel comfortable allowing mine at the same age. Partly because we live on quite a busy road and there doesn't seem to be any other children out either. we have a reasonably sized garden though so they are allowed friends around to play.

Sounds great, we've been quite lucky with the weather only Monday was cold and raining.

We did not have half term....used to have 3 months Summer holiday instead of lots of weeks of holidays in the middle of Winter when u can not do much outside, just catch a cold. It was lovely to spend the whole Summer with my grandparents, in their garden, we could do everything there and some of the afternoon we went to the pepper field and check the plants, sometimes I classed peppers, helped grandma to make jam and compotes...it was great.
