Finding It Impossible to Save

Ask a Question

Anyone got any tips to help me save for emergencies. This past 6 months I’ve found it so hard to every month I keep popping into my overdraft. Tough times!

Put money away when you have been paid so its gone before you run low. Only save what you can genuinely afford to even if its only £5 a week and put it either in a seperate account or somewhere other than your purse /bag so it isnt easily accessible. I use one of those tins that you have to open with a tin opener and put loose change in, you dont miss it and when its full you will be surprised how much you have. If you have someone like a family membe you can trust maybe ask them to keep savings for you then you arent tempted to dip into it. Once you start saving even if its only a bit and you see it start to build it feels so good and you want to keep going. Good luck x

Set up a direct debit to a savings account. Do it so the money comes out the day after you have been paid, that way you don't tend to notice it is missing and you are saving without thinking about it.

Look at your bank statement and cancel anything that you don't need/use anymore and look at where you could cut costs.

Whenever you buy something ask do I actually need it or do I just want it.

Try selling stuff you no longer need and any money you get goes into a bank account.

Make a group of few friends or family members and agree on putting £5 per week. Every week one member can have all the money. Everyone must have a turn.

Once you all get use to it you can start putting more money and that's how you can save more and more.

Families stupidly get into wars because of inheritances so it's wise to be careful about mixing money and family/friends as one of them can snap out. I know this all too well.

I don't think saving is your problem. Spending is. Is there anything that you can cut back on at all? You'll need to, to be able to save.
