Foodbanks for pets are opening across the country as owners hit by the cost-of-living crisis struggle to afford their animals. More than eight in 10 people find it hard to pay for their pets, according to the RSPCA, and in the last two years, the price of pet food has rocketed by as much as 58%.
My dog has allergies and can only eat a certain food costing £10 for a small bag , I can understand the struggle

I don't have any pets anymore as they passed away but I can understand why people are giving their pets up because they can't afford them now so I think this is a good idea
I don't have pets. I'm not allowed them where I am. I do think food banks dhould cover pets. For some people pets is all they have. Given that we are in a recession people got pets when they could afford them. Their circumstances have changed but their pets still need to eat
I think it's a good idea as pets need to be fed also and sometimes when people fall on hard times they cannot afford to keep their pets due to the cost.
I thought pet food was covered by food bank anyway but if not then yes, animals need to eat too.
I think it's a very good idea, we donate quite a bit to our local cat sanctuary food wise when I see a decent deal I'll buy them and donate
Jackscot It is not just about feeding your pets but also any medical bills that need to be paid. Vets are so expensive which I think is a big issue for pet owners and due to this pets don’t get the help they need.
Jackscot people circumstances change. My partner and I both had good paying jobs up until recently then had to leave as I am really poorly and he cares for me. We are still managing with our two pets but many need a little help.
Difficult one - we need to ensure we can afford the things we reach for, and we're a generation that overreach and spend more than we can afford to.
There are some people though, who are in unforseen situations, where they lose everything... and their family including their pets are at risk.
Wouldn’t say we are struggling but have noticed the increase in prices, same with everything but I think pet food banks are a great idea
Unfortunately our dog passed away on Friday night. We will be donating all of her food etc to a local charity so that our dogs can benefit. We noticed the rise in costs. Insurance, vets monthly plan, dog food all went up in price. She was worth it though. Happily sacrificed things for myself so that she was looked after.
Our local food bank takes food for pets. A few local shops have areas where you can donate pet food stuff too.
Whenever any of my pets have passed away Ive always donated their food etc to the vets who then pass it onto a cat charity.
My local food bank regularly posts what they are in need of, I can't remember ever seeing pet food on the list. To be honest it's never crossed my mind but will in future
I don't understand why they need to be separate? If you need a food bank for your pet you probably need help yourself so have them both in same place.

Someone recently post a plea for pet food to be donated to a local charity. They were so lucky and inundated with tins and packets.
Yes many people living rough feeg their dogs before themselves and it may cut down on abandoned pets
Excellent Idea to help people rather than force pet owner to rehome and lose a valuable member of their family. Pet food has become so expensive, people on average income have very little excess money, but people on low income - it must be a nightmare. The cost of living has hit so dramatically they have been left in this position through no fault of their own
Definately. The animals have a hard time, espcially when the owners fall on bad times.
It is not the fault of the pet, so why not give them a treat.
I personaly feed my cat better than myself. There should be food bank for pets. His cat food from ALDI has increased from £2.69 to £3.39. No doubt his insurance will be up as well. I look after him and in return he looks after me and is very good company.
It cost me £20 a week to feed my cat and £200 a month in vets bills. I'm selling stuff to try and raise money for the next vet bill but it's not looking good.
Its the vets fees that are the problem!!
Food need not cost much
When I have my son's dogs i cook a big pan of brown rice and give them chicken and any leftover veg mixed in
I buy a huge bag of chicken fillets from Farm foods for £9 cook it and bag up in the freezer. Probably well under £1 a day for fwo spaniels
My 11 year old cat was a stray that I took in well before the current economic crisis, he has been pretty healthy but suddenly became very ill in October/November and I thought we would lose him. I eventually found a charity vet but still had to pay £300 which was money we didn't really have. The upside is that he has made a full recovery, but when your pet becomes sick then the bills become shocking and it does put a huge strain on the budget.
