Food Waste Bags, Why so Expensive?

Money Saving

I'm trying to improve my helping the environment and use the food waste recycling scheme. I've used all the bags that came with the bin my council provided. They seem pricy to buy, so I tried wrapping food in newspaper - but that is too messy, plus goes everywhere (roast dinner left overs yesterday-ripped the paper before I placed in the bin!). Is there anywhere that sells the composting bags cheap? Currently they coming up at 8p each... I might as well just buy a carrier from Coop and use them!!!

You should be able to request free waste bags from your local council, or pick them up from a recycling centre, if I need new bags, I tie one onto the handle of the bin and they get replaced when the bin gets emptied, simple idea and it works well.

pato you are very lucky, unfortunately my council don't do this. I emailed and asked them before posting the post... They just said to buy from supermarket!

I buy them from Lidl. I can’t quite remember how much they are but they are definitely cheap and a decent quality with good tie handles.

pato I don’t think these are biodegradable, which food waste bags are supposed to be. We are lucky and the council provides ours (when they have any!)

Grannyclock I don't have a dog so I wouldn't really know that, but you would think that the should be as to me there's nothing more disgusting than a bag of shoite 👍

It would be nice to actually have a local food waste collection!

It seems to be a theme, it costs more to help the environment. I went out to get my sister some eco products and the cost is stupid compared the regular products.

Eco toothbrush was £4 and pack of 2 normal toothbrushes £1.20.

Other things need to change in cost.

Second hand ev cars are probably double the cost of second hand petrol/diesel cars. The heat pumps cost about £10k and you can get a gas boiler for about £3.

Prices need a massive change if they are hoping to get people to be more green.

This is the case sometimes but not always, and more and more often now eco-friendly alternatives are becoming more affordable. For example, you mentioned toothbrushes. Some bamboo toothbrushes are expensive, but you can get a 3 pack of bamboo toothbrushes in Home Bargains for 99p or £1.49 (I'm sure it was 99p and they sell both adults and children's).

SilverSurfer you're right, it makes it so much harder to try and help the environment, when it simply costs a fortune.

lornaae You can also buy toothbrush for as little as £0.29. I understand they are becoming affordable but still will be too expensive for some families.

My friend bought some waste bags and they are slightly perfumed. Apparently the smell is supposed to deter animals from ripping them open but they weren’t cheap.

My council provide us with free bags, that are Bio- degradable. The bags so tight to go in the caddy, they rip on the sides! I buy a pack to use in emergencies 👍

CarolSarich it's good you are provided them, you think the council would ensure they provide the right size though!

CarolSarich this is true... Find some of them don't appear to live in real world! On contrary some are amazing though.

Ann1984 this was exactly what I was thinking, just buy a roll of them. Seems a better option all round.

BilgehanDeniz you are very lucky indeed. I wish ours did, we pay council tax the same across the country, surely all councils should provide the same.

I buy mine from Aldi, they were 8p then they went down to 5p a few years ago, now they are 10p each. I wish they were still 5p. I hope someone finds them cheaper. I thought the supermarket carrier bags had holes/perforations at the bottom of the bags. Are they compostable and cheaper then 😁

Our council, East Riding of Yorkshire give these out free, we just need to pick them up the library, it may be worth seeing if your council give out additional bags on request.
