Why Do People Invade Personal Space in Public Settings?

Ask a Question

Can anyone explain why you can be the only ones in a waiting room, cafe,

restaraunt etc, and when the next persons come in they survey the room and then sit directly behind you so as to make you uncomfortable by poking their chair in you back or asking you to move so that they can be comfortable

regardless of the fact that the rest of the space is vacant and you were already

seated.

Perhaps this relates to rudeness once again !

telmel Yes I don’t trust anyone who gets too close as I was almost a victim in Morrisons. Thankfully I felt something and quickly turned round and caught them.

You have my sympathies, I find it's the same in car parks. There can be spaces galore but they come and park next to your car despite the fact that you clearly parked all alone, not very near to the shop with the intention of not having anyone else park close to you. Crowding!

These days Mr T sits in the car whilst I shop to ensure no-one knocks the car while I am shopping.

tumblespots I get the same problem (my dad also says it happens to him too) especially when you park miles away from the store entrance and they still come and park next to you. It’s really annoying as sometimes I put shopping in back rather than boot and come back and find can’t get door fully opened. I can only think it’s because they need another car to line up too, otherwise I have no idea

Gromit22 It is quite a common problem and that's why we park at the back of the car park. It's as if we have a sign on the car asking people to park next to us. 😮

If they can't back into a space in a straight line without another car being there they shouldn't be driving!

It does happen sometimes, i think it’s mostly cause people don’t like waiting in an empty room so they get nervous and want to be near someone else

I have noticed this a lot as well. Even today while shopping, why does someone have to stand so close to you in a queue, back off!

eyeballkerry I hate that! I try so hard to keep a distance since covid but the person behind is right up close and if they have sniffles it’s the worst.

eyeballkerry I will say at some point, do you want to pay for my shopping as you’re closer to the card machine than me now!

Oh how I hate this. Was queueing at tesco the other day and a woman was standing pretty much on my heels. Can't stand it

Hate it when the car driver takes two spaces up instead of one, leaving you nowhere to park up too!

Because people are awful. Pure rudeness. Though I walk in a place look for the least busiest place to sit so I don't have to people

I have found that too. If someone sits too close to me I engage them in conversation until one of us has to go for the appointment or they get up and leave! If it is busy then that is different but when quiet I just don't understand it.

My daughter in law was remarking exactly the same thing. She find it quite uncomfortable and off putting.

I don't like it at the checkout when paying with my card as some people are too close to the machine.I turn the card machine round so that they can't see if I have to put in my pin.I also ask them to move back which they don't like.
