Hermit Crabs Are Sexually Attracted to Plastic Pollution in the Ocean
In the News
Everyone hates plastic pollution, right? We don’t like seeing photos of turtles caught in abandoned fishing nets, birds tangled in discarded packaging, or the sheer amount of microplastic fish end up consuming.
Well it turns out one particular species doesn’t feel so negatively towards the mounting marine plastic problem - in fact, they are actually turned on by this waste…
You read that right, hermit crabs are attracted to plastic in the ocean.
MelissaLee1963 Not my favourite M , i prefer real crab
Fake crab – called crab stick, crab cake or surimi – is a gluey emulsion made from the pulverised meat of cheaper species of fish, bound together with additives and salt to give it the flavour and mouth-feel of more expensive crab
telmel Right you are T.I had blue crab taken fresh from the waters of Dalyan in Turkey. My mother was like a child in a sweet shop but I think its too much work for too little nosh lol.
And now I investigate further I discover that a hermit crab is neither a hermit nor a crab ..er in the purest sense that is! and the weird blighter pees through his face. They swap shells occassionally as well bit like musical chairs I imagine.
