What's the Cost of a Black Ink Cartridge for a Lexmark Printer?

Ask a Question

Hi. We have a printer at home but haven’t used for years as decided ink was just too expensive. I now find I might need to print the odd form or two. I don’t need colour, just black will do but how much does a cartridge cost these days? Thank you. It’s a Lexmark printer.

I've seen advice where they say nowadays choose the ink before the printer. I.e. find cheap ink cartridges or laser toner cartridges and then choose the printer they fit too as many printers nowadays are ridiculously expensive to print with. I saw a lovely Canon printer in a charity shop in Blandford it was as new for £8 but a quick google showed one pack of cartridges was over £25 and there was no generic/clone alternative cartridges. If I used that for ebay I'd probably have to put up all my prices by 10% just to pay for the ink cartridges. The ink cartridges I currently use cost about £3 for a set of 4 and that is a Epson XP model perhaps 415.

BonzoBanana I don't have a printer anymore because the HP21 ink was too expensive to buy. I gave the printer to Currys to recycle. I am going to research the printer you have mentioned. Thanks for the advice of choosing the ink first.

I'm not sure how much ink is these days. We also have a printer which we haven't used for years as the ink was expensive. I just got to the library now to get things printed, cost me 16p last time I needed to print a form in black and white.

MrsCraig Thank you. I have done that but still a bit of inconvenience having to transfer it over and then visit to print.

I have a printer which offer ink replacement on a monthly charge I pay the lowest subscription as print of labels for when I sell items. The amount I pay is £1.49 for 15 pages a month, unused pages roll over and I can have up to 36. It works for me as they send ink as I need them and they also provide free return envelopes for the empty cartridges.

IonaJones What brand of printer is this? I use the library's printer at 20p per sheet.

jam45 mine is a HP and when I bought it I was offered the subscription and I did look at the ink prices before I committed. This is a good way to do it.

IonaJones I guess I pay around £4.00 for a 500 sheet ream of A4 paper and probably get through one black ink cartridge per ream (it's mainly postage labels which only print to a small part of the A4 sheet). So I guess my costs per page are about 1p as the black cartridge is about £1. I buy the cartridges in packs of 8 for £7-10. I don't print much colour output. In the last week I've printed about 30-40 labels.

Apparently you can refill a lot of printer ink these days. You need to be nice to someone who knows about these things and invite them round for a cuppa. I'm sure they would be more than willing to explain to you how to do this or even refill them for you. All the best.

I also have a subscription with hp, I think it's a fiver a month and they send new cartridges out when the ink in the printer is low. They also recycle the used cartridges x

nina090976 That might be convenient if you're printing every now and then, but for most ink carts can last months.

"Printer Subscription" that's.. weird. They make subscriptions of everything now.

PhilipMarc yeah, my printer does overtime 😂my daughter uses it a lot for her college work, then there's vinted 🙈 then random forms every so often, definately getting used enough to justify costs x

Oh god, printers. 😑 You may think you don't need color, but the printer demands it regardless.

Here's a rant video which stays true to this very day:

Anyway, you could look up ink carts on eBay.
