A Hotdog Takes 36 Mins off Your Life but a Handful of Nuts Adds 26 Mins

In the News

Michigan scientists developed a nutritional index that calculates whether a particular type of food adds a net benefit or detriment to our minutes of healthy life.

In other words some foods shorten our lifespan while others help us live longer

The study with seaweed is really interesting. That’s a large reduction in methane emissions due to a simple dietary change.

Think i’ll try it on the dog!

That sounds great for me as well, can’t stand hotdogs but will eat most kind of nuts, cashews are my favourites.

Why am I reading this news the day after I ate 3 hot dogs? To be honest I don't take these studies too seriously you could drive yourself crazy if you tried to keep up with every one.

Thats true S, one day something is bad for you, the next its not and the recommended thing the experts suggest you eat is worse

Butter is a typical example where the alternative, margerine is 10 times worse if it contains trans fatty acids

I like hotdogs myself with lashings of mustard and tomato sauce, but i have always known the so called meat in the sausage is practically non nutritional , quote, ''most of the time, hot dogs are made with skeletal meat, which are trimmings of the same type of meat that makes ground meat''

I would say that I take this study with 'a pinch of salt' but I'm sure that would be more time off my life! I don't always make healthy choices but I try to keep things in moderation.

I'll stay with hot dogs thanks, not that I have them that often.

I don't fancy rotting away in a care home, so I'm going to keep on doing what I'm doing, within reason and try to enjoy life as much as I can.

Sensible remark TC, i feel the same, i look after myself and stay healthy but like the occassional ''bad boy '' like a hotdog or burger , as long as you only eat junk food now and again it wont harm, whats a few minutes off your life anyway , i wont be counting 😳 Image

So I can pig out on both and only lose 10 mins then T? Love hotdogs but I fancy the contents are somewhat spurious .Give me a nice Cumberland any day.

Hope that is true. I keep a bag of redskin peanuts in my office desk. Have just a handful most days. Never anymore.

Also,, I haven't had a hotdog for 40 years!

Thats great D , so according to the article you should live a longer life and be one of the lucky ones to get that Telegram from the Queen

Maybe her majesty likes nuts too

She only has 5 years to go, but who will send her a telegram ?

I can't see the issue with occasional hot dogs. I know they contain nitrates which can lead to nitrosamines which are cancer forming but most food has some health issues for some people. Pretty much all cured and processed meat is bad for you. Sausages are much healthier than hot dogs although still hardly healthy and I enjoy sausages more so for me its a rarity to have hot dogs anyway.

I use normal sausages in my homemade hotdogs B , usually i try to find some with more meat content than bread , the onions arent too bad , they have some nutrition and the mustard also Tomato ketchup has no nutrition , unlike tomato sauce so best to choose low sugar and salt

I think the industrial hotdogs are the ones the article refers too , homemade can have some nutrition

If I eat hotdogs and then some nuts do I only lose 10 minutes off my life. If so, it’s a gamble worth taking…
