Any Ideas on How to Cheaply Keep Warm This Winter
Ask a Question
I have a disability that when I’m cold it gets worse so I’m trying to keep warm this winter without spending a fortune as I can’t afford to do that as I’m sure most people are the same at the moment So far I have an electric blanket and I bought a heated gillet advertised from here the other day as the blanket only keeps me warm while in bed. My family bought me one of those oversized hoodies Also my family try to gather bits of wood etc to burn in our fire but it only heats one room has anyone got any other tips or tricks.
Thermal clothing, vests, leggings.
Heated socks, Herbal teas (ginger/peppermint tea)
Using spices cayenne and cinnamon are meant to help raise body temperature x
nina090976 thank you. I was never aware of the use of the spices helping to keep warm. I must order some and try them out
elliemarie884 yes I have been trying that but find my hands get cold which causes pains and also my feet. I will try and wear some extra layers and see if that helps thank you for your help
gjvj get blankets, my cousin has weighted ones as a weighted quilt and she said they are good at keeping her warm on an evening. I've not tried them myself but worth a try.
elliemarie884 thank you. I must look into this. I will add a few extra layers to my bed
I've started layering up clothes now even inside and just invested in some merino wool leggings. Also a cup of hot water with a spoonful of honey is a comforting drink that warms you right up.
I have mentioned somewhere else on here that my son bought me an electric sofa blanket last year. You just snuggle under it and it costs just 1p per hour to run dependent on the setting you have it on.
gjvj I use a microwavable hotwater bottle which is quick and easy to move around to cold spots. What about Microwave boots similar to www.amazon.co.uk/Intelex-Boots-Microwaveable-Warmers-Cream/dp/B002OL2LMS/ref=sr_1_14?crid=K768WC2X5XW9&keywords=microwave%20boots&qid=1666271692&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI0LjUxIiwicXNhIjoiNC4yMiIsInFzcCI6IjMuNzIifQ%3D%3D&s=drugstore&sprefix=microwave%20boots%2Cdrugstore%2C101&sr=1-14 Fingerless gloves www.amazon.co.uk/Chalier-Fashion-Womens-Fingerless-Mittens/dp/B081RP2GMJ/ref=sxin_15_sbv_search_btf?content-id=amzn1.sym.c5629250-1e5d-4c40-820a-5b1f8689d08d%3Aamzn1.sym.c5629250-1e5d-4c40-820a-5b1f8689d08d&crid=2XRG865TQ6YE1&cv_ct_cx=fingerless%20gloves&keywords=fingerless%20gloves&pd_rd_i=B081RP2GMJ&pd_rd_r=856bb926-bed8-4103-8038-96dad771d84c&pd_rd_w=eelWt&pd_rd_wg=soBkA&pf_rd_p=c5629250-1e5d-4c40-820a-5b1f8689d08d&pf_rd_r=2RGZFXMNTXSBAB8HS1H9&psc=1&qid=1666271836&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI3LjQxIiwicXNhIjoiNi42MCIsInFzcCI6IjYuNDAifQ%3D%3D&s=drugstore&sprefix=fingerless%20gloves%20%2Cdrugstore%2C90&sr=1-1-9131241a-a358-4619-a7b8-0f5a65d91d81
lilyflower these are great ideas. Thank you for sharing the link to the products. I really appreciate it. Thank you for helping me
gjvj They were just examples as there are loads on the market, just find the right price
I use hot water bottles to heat myself - even just to heat your bed for you before you get in, they can help a lot I find.
I also keep curtains shut in some rooms during the day since I find it keeps any heat inside better. But I also only have single glazing, so a lot escapes through the draughty windows here.
If you don’t already have any draught excluders on the bottoms of doors I find they help a lot too. I got mine in Poundland over 5 years ago and they’re still in great condition and help a lot given my house is so draughty.
I’ve also seen a lot of people recommending hand warmers that are rechargeable, but I haven’t used those myself so I don’t know how well they work.
I bought a Kigu online. It’s basically a nice roomy onsie. It’s great for keeping warm but awful when you need the loo.
I don’t work as I’m disabled- if I’m not seeing or expecting to see anyone- I do stuff that I can do whilst still under my duvet ! I’ve got into colouring books (at 54 !) don’t heat rooms you aren’t going to be in. I’m quite badly physically disabled- but I also don’t see the point in getting out of warm pj’s just because you think you should. I might not use all the rooms in my house but there still aren’t enough hours in the day to try another art or craft etc that I can do sitting down.
suevernon1968 thank you for this great advice as I mostly would change from my warm pyjamas into my clothes when really there was no need to as I’m not going anywhere. I do enjoy colouring in with the grandchildren so maybe will do that more often as it does keep my mind busy. Thank you for your help
gjvj you are more than welcome- it’s awful when your mind says yeah and your body says no ! It also saves on washing ! X
suevernon1968 yes with having a disability myself my mind wants to do stuff many times but my body refuses to cooperate
gjvj it’s about keeping your mind occupied on things you can do whilst you are still in your cosy pj’s under your duvet. Obviously you have to make sure that you exercise - there are lots of ideas online for exercises that you can do sat down- or holding onto something etc x
suevernon1968 I must look into this as at this time of year I do move about less due to pain. Thank you for your help
