Do You Keep Your Salary Private?

Ask a Question

If your friends asked what you earn, would you tell them?

There's a social media trend that shows strangers being asked what they earn to try and encourage social transparency.

Is your salary something you feel is private and wouldn't let anyone know?

Very private about all things financial. I was listening to radio 2 earlier and it was reported the chief exec of the post office left her post with over £300k pension, I’m sure she would have liked that kept quiet.

It's got nothing to do with anyone else, I've never told anyone what I've earned apart from my wife

Queenofdeals786 I think some of it can be trust, but with a lot of people it just feels like something private they don't want to share.

It depends who asked to be honest. My salary varies each month, my hourly rate stays the same though so would tell them that. To be honest I don't care what my friends earn. It has nothing to do with me. I do think that when people hear what you earn their perception of you changes.

MrsCraig ,the only person who knows what I earn is my partner, we work for the same company as Support Workers, him one end of Sheffield, me at the other under different Management. My partner sends me my wage slip via WhatsApp every month,he has my permission to do this..

janphoenix51 my husband knows what I earn each month, I tell him, plus he sees it going into our bank account. My parents know my hourly rate but that's it. I like that he sends you your wage slip via WhatsApp.

I keep all the finer details private, I will give ball park figures to close friends and family if we’re talking about money. I don’t want to know the ins and outs of their finances either.

I think it’s totally your own business whether you share it with anyone or not. Depends who it is and why they would want to know. Also it’s not always the amount of income that is the priority. I would hate to be stressed to the hilt with no time for myself just for a certain salary. I mean you wouldn’t necessarily have the time to enjoy it.

I would not tell friends or colleagues my salary, as I think it's likely to encourages jealously and resentment if your are earning more than them .

Mango4 If you thought you were earning less/the same would it make you more likely to discuss it?

I feel we should be entitled to know what is being paid in the public sector as those wages and pensions are provided by the forced taxation of the general population however that doesn't mean we should know exactly what individuals are being paid just what is approximately being paid for such roles.

Here in Somerset our council is in debt for £825 million with yearly interest payments of £32 million. Some of the wages paid to mid-level and high level public sector workers are deeply unfair to the general population especially when these people are clearly completely incompetent at running such councils. Tax payers should have some control over public sector wages and then if people want to apply for those public sector jobs at that wage level so be it but public sector wages should not be set by public sector workers themselves.

I don't believe we have the right to know the wages of fully private companies employees but those companies with shareholders certainly should.

Depends on the friend really. I know some people consider it rude to discuss things like monthly earnings and savings etc but personally Ive got no problem talking about it

Nope, don't tell anyone. It's just a thing to either gloat or complain about. You either are happy with your income or not, it's not for anyone else to comment about.

Definitely very private!!!! It’s not very nice finding out you earn less than your coworkers because your role has been answered and your named as the person to ask because your on a different contract.

Most of my friends are colleagues that I work with so we all know what we are getting In terms of payouts. I dont get a salary, Instead I get an hourly wage. Two different meanings.

I don’t think it is anyone’s business what another person earns. I never even asked my husband when he was working. I think it can cause problems in a work place if people know what others are earning.

Definitely a private matter for me. I don't care what my friends earn and I can't see why they would care about my salary.

If I was asked that question I'd just say "not enough". My friends don't even understand how i earn my money let alone how much. It's no one's business & I'd never dream of asking anyone the question either.

Its a similar scenario to those zoopla adverts , would you tell how much you paid for your house ?

I would never tell my friends what I earn, that is between me and the company I work for. I would tell my other half if he asked but he never has. He would do the same if I asked.

I prefer not to tell people. I had a chat with a friend recently who has been offered a new job. She told me the salary increase but we've never talked about how much we earn in the first place so it didn't really factor much beyond she thinks it makes a big difference
