Did You Know Your Mirrors Can Interfere with Your Wi Fi ?

Ask a Question

I think we all suffer with problems from our internet now and again, sometimes it could go unexplained

We are told to try to position the router close to your laptop or tablet and try to avoid too many walls

Well here's one fact i didn't know about, having your mirror too close to the router can also block the signal

Apparently mirrors contain a thin coat of metal that can potentially block and cause connection problems

The mirror could be a large hanging type or even mirrored wardrobes

It is recommended that the router is at least one metre away from anything reflective

So it is better to listen to Carly Simon if you want a stronger connection and take her advice about being vain

If only the broadband companies could sort the WiFi out we wouldn't need to worry about mirrors ect that's my reflection on it telmel

My mirrors are at least one metre away but the connections falls out everytime it rains. Now I'm not the smartest person when it comes to technology and I'm certainly not imagining it, but everytime it rains here the internet goes **** up.

EmmaWright762 I know the rain can effect satellite dish reception so i suppose it could effect internet to E

EmmaWright762 the WiFi stops or the whole.internet cuts out? If it's the internet it could be the wiring going to the property being affected. It seems odd regardless

EmmaWright762 That's probably because people end up going indoors like kids and playing computer games so the contention ratio means you don't have much bandwidth. My mother is on Shell broadband (soon to be talktalk broadband annoyingly) and her contention ratio means come the evening her internet slows down considerably and even cuts out at times because her connection could be shared by 50 other homes who are all using it in the evening. Also I have been using her connection occasionally for torrents so perhaps she is getting punished with regard bandwidth because of me. I'm on old style copper connect broadband with a speed of about 6-7 megabits per second and she is on around 35-40 megabits per second however the reliability of her connection is very poor where as my connection also with Shell broadband is rock solid at my lower speed. In a few days I'm moving to BT with a 40 megabits connection.

I found this about weather related internet problems

Wireless connections, such as fixed wireless internet and cellular networks, are quite vulnerable to weather-related internet problems. This is because wireless signals can be easily blocked or interfered with by water, rain, snow, fog, and even dust.Aug 9, 2023

Wifi is just another waveform and different materials absorb or reflect waveforms to varying degrees. Visible light is just a small part of electromagnetic radiation amongst the whole range.

We don't have any mirrors near our router and the signal is still crap or cuts out

martinlufc5637 That could just be the internet company then M, or you could try buying a signal extender

I got one from amazon about £18 i think it was , because i have a ring doorbell outside the house and the signal would not reach it before

Now i have very strong wi fi and the ring works perfect , i would recommend one to anybody with a poor signal, mirrors or no mirrors

telmel I have purchased a few different extenders, they do boost the signal but not enough to reach our front door for a video doorbell

martinlufc5637 Mine does M, i bought a TP link with the three adjustable ariels at the top

I plugged it into a socket into the conservatory which is the closest to the ring doorbell outside and i get a great connection

Without it i get nothing and the wi fi throughout the house is stronger too
