The Latest Driving Crash Scam to Watch out For

In the News

There is a new driving scam doing the rounds that everyone needs to be aware of

The fraudsters wait on a side road for example for a passing vehicle then throw a rock at their car to make it look as if they have clipped their wing mirror

The wing mirror is already damaged but they flash the car to stop and ask for a payment for the fictitious damage ,intimidating them to pay or even following them to a cashpoint for the cash

They are targeting younger and older drivers as they are the more vulnerable

This is where a webcam could come in handy to record what they are doing, or even a photo from your mobile to take their registration plate number

People could say it will go through the insurance to see if they are at fault, but the scammers are very aggressive to make you pay up

It would be best to try to call the police if the opportunity arises and you don't feel in danger

telmel Not quite sure that a webcam would help 🤣

Seriously though, I just had a dash cam fitted for this type of thing. Wasn't cheap at £280, but that did include the fitting.

I've a webcam that I need to get the oh to fit.. He thinks I'm sad but I'm the one who got hit by a car jumping the lights and blaming me. To the point said driver tried to say the damage was already done. He was ignoring the part of the bumper he hit and hanging off and looking at the bit that I'd damaged before. The police even tried to reattach it so I could move it.

I'm with you. I'd have been able to prove I didn't jump the light if I'd had a dash cam

Thanks for the warning of this new scam. Unfortunately the dash can doesn't cover the sides which is probably why they have created this one. I personally would just exchange details, take photos of both cars and inform my insurance company that it's a scam and let them deal with it

jamiemat I believe there are some advanced models that are wide angled and front and back that might cover the sides, but probably more expensive, i think some taxi drivers use them j
