Lets Make a List of Life Hacks

Other

I love anything that makes my life easier. So thought we could suggest life hacks to each other… I’ll start…

We have sheet-less duvets… it’s a duvet with a sheet stitched in. We got ours from Amazon. So you throw the whole duvet in the machine (need a decent size machine) saves the annoying 5 mins of trying to get the sheet back on the duvet!

Descale your Kettle with Lemon & Lime double concentrate squash from ASDA. It works and It Is much cheaper than the proper descaler. The bottle will last you along time as you only need about half of cup. Try It as Its only a pound and 10 pence for the bottle.

Emerge11 use a bottle of cheap vinegar. Costs even less and works better. You don't need much either. Normal lemon juice will work too, again cheaper.

MrsCraig I tried Vinegar. It lingers so you have to boil and empty several times. Lemons dont last so long so In the end you end up throwing them out. What I use lasts forever and It does not linger so much.

Emerge11 you don't need to boil after using vinegar, you just rinse and empty a few times, no need to boil. You don't need to buy lemons, you just buy a bottle of lemon juice.

I make my own garlic butter, as I grow garlic, I then freeze it in ice cube trays to give a measured amount later when I want to use it.

My local Co op was selling off bottles of oil a few months ago. When the lemons are reduced I buy them and make lemon oil. I made some up yesterday as I do a lot of home cooking. I do the same with fresh chillies and fresh garlic. Much better and cheaper than the shops own make.

I use a diluted bio-detergent in a spray bottle ... and spray it as a carpet deodoriser (rather than that horrible shaker powder). Then leave for 10 minutes or so before vacuuming.

Talcum powder is utterly brilliant at lifting oil based stains from clothes. It got pizza oil off a very expensive highland dancing kilt

Pfs I honestly couldn't believe it worked . It was on the cream coloured part of a £500.00 wool kilt. Just heavy sprinkled the powder on. Lifted it right off.

When making a hot water bottle, I fill the kettle with hot water from the kitchen tap. This makes use of the energy you've already spent on your hot water supply, and reduces the time it takes to bring the kettle to a rolling boil, and thus saves on energy that would have been spent boiling the water from cold.

Best thermos flask tip I ever got was from a lady called Cathy. Fill it up with boiling water before you store it. The water prevents smells building up. It's never failled. I use a thermos to keep my gravy hot at Christmas

Instead of spending a fortune on febreeze and similar brands, make up your own solution, much cheaper and just as good

I use fabric conditioner, mix 25% to 50% ratio water to conditioner , depending on your preference and pour into an empty spray bottle

You can use it to freshen up furniture , curtains, cushions ,bedding ,clothes , almost anything , it wont stain and the smell stays there all day , longer if you use it more concentrated

Its basically what they use in febreeze without the clever marketing and cost

I use any M, usually just buy the supermarkets own brand, depends where i go shopping , but concentrate is better then you can water it down to your own strength , trial and error until you get the mix for you

Cleaning your travel mug!

As they say not to put in the dishwasher bring the dishwasher to the mug. Drop a dishwasher tablet in mug and fill with hot water, leave for about an hour then rinse out. Spotless inside, like new again

I don't use fabric conditioner as its a marketing ploy. I don't have a dryer just use airers. I also use bicarb of soda and Vinegar to clean. Your house won't smell of Vinegar and it works well

If you get condensation on the inside of your windscreen fill a sock with either cat litter (unused obviously lol) or rice keeping it in a sausage shape and leave it (or them) in your dashboard overnight. They both work as dehumidifiers and will stop most of the condensation forming at all. Use new filling as necessary.
