I Live Alone - Am I a Humbug for Not Putting a Christmas Tree up ?

Other

I live alone and don’t spend much time in my living room and rarely have visitors. Don’t get me wrong I don’t spend my life alone - I see my kids regularly, I have 11 grandchildren- I will be doing the round’s Christmas morning with the grandkids presents then stay for Christmas dinner at one of their homes. I am quite physically disabled and I will either have a nap at theirs (normally with at least 1 grandchild). Then play with the kids then come home completely shattered and go to bed. I don’t see the point in putting a tree up ? I will have strings of LED lights (out of the way of my gorgeous cats) possibly some mistletoe if I’m feeling lucky lol

I wouldn't bother. Last year was the first year that I put up a Christmas tree. I didn't bother when it was just my husband and I and only put it up last year because my son was starting to understand Christmas and my parents were coming round. I complained the whole time I was putting the tree and decorations up last year.

Only you can answer that, if it brings you any joy go for it, if it’s a hassle don’t.

have you thought about inviting the grandchildren round to put it up with you? Kids love that sort of thing and you can make a day of it..

I think it's entirely up to you, my son who lives alone and isn't putting up any Christmas decorations and I never did when I was younger as I used to spend the holidays back home.

Years ago I used to go all out, when my son was younger, but I must admit as I have got older I put up less and less each year in fact in the last few years my husband has put up all the decorations including decorating the tree, something I used to love doing.

I live alone and am not putting a tree up. I have a lovely Christmas ornament that sits across my mantelpiece but don't see the point of a tree. However, if the family were coming to me for Christmas I would put one up, but I am going to them.

If it’s too arduous then don’t bother. However your kids could do it for you.

I would not put one up if I had a choice, a lot of work for something that just gets in the way. I would prefer to use my limited energy and time to paint a room.

I always made a big deal every year about the Christmas tree. I never imagined ‘not’ putting a tree up. The first Christmas after my husband passed I made a big effort to put the tree up. Well two trees actually. But last year I couldn’t muster the enthusiasm. I’ve now moved in to a small apartment and don’t really have room for my trees so I’m just going to place a few Christmas bits around the apartment and have some lovely, twinkly lights. So the short answer is; you do as you please. It’s about sharing love and spending time with loved ones. Have a lovely Christmas 🎄😉

Thank you all so much for your comments. When the grandkids were younger and I wasn’t so disabled everyone came to my house for Christmas dinner I would go all out. Some of the grandkids will spend time with me - making glitter paper chains, glitter fairies for their own trees etc. but as no one will actually be visiting over Christmas I am happy with my decision to not put a tree up. If anyone visits I will light the coal fire and set the tv to a picture of a Christmas tree. Thank you everyone xx

I have a family in my home and some years we do not bother putting up anything, it really depends what we are doing before Christmas and where we will spend Christmas Day. This year we in the Caribbean before Christmas and then spending the day at my daughters pub so I will imagine we will all agree and not put any decorations up.

Considering your circumstances, I don't see the point in putting up a Christmas tree. Enjoy your celebrations with family 😃

I don't bother myself but my mother lives nearby and so I can see decorations there when I go there. I don't think I have any decorations here now. I gave them to my mother as wasn't using mine. I really enjoy seeing decorations in the high street and many houses nearby who really go to town on decorating the outside of their houses. When I did do them it was very low key, small tree and a few other minor decorations and nowhere as near as nice as what you can see elsewhere. I sometimes put on a open fire screensaver on my tv while I'm doing other stuff just to give a little bit of christmas atmosphere that requires no effort or expense on my part.
