Are Loyalty Card Discounts Fair?

Ask a Question

Do you think loyalty card discounts are fair?

If you go to Sainsbury’s and Tesco without one, it means you are often paying much higher prices but if you use one, they are getting the data from you on your shopping habits.

No, loyalty cards should be abolish and everyone pays the same prices for the same items.

Often the Clubcard or nectar price is probably the actual price. The others are inflated so you have to pay extra. So probably not fair, no.

No dislike loyalty cards thou am forced into using them to get the lower prices. Wish they would abandon them altogether .

They are fair, but boy do I swear if I enter the shop and realise I've left mine at home

SamGoodship As you say, they are just used to gather data. And as JLouM says, prices are artificially inflated just to bring them down again.

They are just a big con job and should be stopped.

We should all be charged the same but maybe reward regular shopper with points that can build up for prizes.

I really can't see the problem if its a free loyalty scheme. All stores have some sort of loyalty scheme nowadays with the exception of Aldi maybe. Asda, Coop, Waitrose, M&S, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Lidl or have loyalty schemes with discounts for those that use the schemes. I suppose Aldi is the shop for you if you hate loyalty schemes although personally I find the quality hit and miss and nowadays some items can be surprisingly expensive there. It's my nearest supermarket within fairly easy walking distance so regularly do little top up shops there.

I actually prefer a Clubcard discount or Nectar discount to the offer of bonus points you might get at lets say Morrisons or Asda because the discount is instant rather than building up points.

I wish the shops would just charge the lowest price and have no need to use loyalty cards, stop these silly inflated prices if you don't use one.

I think if they can lower prices for items then Why can’t they lower the prices Anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️ Same as Christmas they hike up prices and then Christmas Eve and Boxing Day they drop the price some times less than half of the original prices, Shops should be Made to Drop the Prices long before Christmas Eve and Boxing Day never mind loyalty cards We are all Loyal Shoppers so we should all have a right to the same price

Yes according to me because you will save money if you are properly using it

The offers tend to be on branded items so I rarely take advantage of them anyway. I always use my loyalty app wherever I shop. I like the Lidl loyalty app, especially the 10% off.

I have loyalty cards to all the main supermarkets as it doesn't cost anything to join, but I don't know why they have introduced the 2 price tier, which is unfair. I think it's to save them £ as previously you got more points on the amount you spent.

beccatavender I agree, the 2 tier price is definitely not fair, especially with the cost of living, they're just taking advantage.

I don't think the subject of it being unfair and abolishing loyalty schemes etc came up before this 2 tier pricing (did it?).

I think the previous gaining points for spending is fair, like being a VIP because you shop there a lot - hence, 'loyalty'.

But the tiered pricing is for literally anyone with an account whether they shop often or not - so they entice you to gain your info and research you.

I don't have loyalty cards for places I hardly go to but if I feel like I need to get one for every shop for the one time I go, to benefit from the tiered prices.

hky They just introduced this pricing and now nearly everyone is doing it including Boots.

My son has taken out a loyalty card for Tesco's, something he didn't feel the need to do, when it was just points, but the difference in their meal deal prices is ridiculous. He doesn't shop at Tescos except to buy lunch during the week.

beccatavender I didn't know Boots do it now, too.

I just thought the other day that there's only a Tesco Express near me, which prices are usually higher than the main Tesco (unless it's changed in recent yrs), so I wonder if the loyalty prices are the same across all stores. If so, then I guess, that could be a benefit, if there's only small stores nearby.

Also, hope you had gd holidays and New Yr, as well as anyone else who sees 🙂

These are the worse way the loyalty cards work. I never forgot my cards as they are in an app on my phone where i have Apple Pay as well. But I really don’t think it is necessary. Just keep the prices down for all.

Fair? No.

If you have a loyalty card you may pay cheaper, while without one you end up paying more e.g. Tesco's Reward Card.

I did use Lidl's digital card several times this month to get food cheaper, but normally I don't make much use since there isn't much saving generally.

I dont see the problem myself as the cards are free. They often do offer genuine lower prices and do save people money. People can shop around and it is your choice sign up (and therefore allow Tesco etc to get better data on what you are buying). If they do ban these deals then we wont see cheaper prices for all, we will just loose the deals.

I use the Shoppify app to scan my receipts for pay and also do surveys on Curiosity Cat and StreetBees for cash so guess they know already about my bad eating habits lol.

I think the way that the supermarkets see it is - if you give us your contact information we will give you cheaper prices - once they have your address they can send you money off vouchers/special deals that will hopefully encourage you to buy something that you wouldn’t normally buy.
