Tom Hanks 'The Terminal Man' who lived in Paris airport for 18 Years Dies
In the News
The Iranian man, Merhan Nasseri , who inspired the film 'the terminal' starring tom hanks has died of a heart attack
He lived for 18 years in Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport until 2006 , then went to hospital when taken ill and moved to a hostel with money he got from the film, then moved back to the airport for a few weeks where he died
He wasn't destitute though as he had a few thousand euros on him when he passed away
Apparently while living at the airport they would let him use the staff toilets and showers
At least he was clean, kept warm and dry, unlike many homeless on the streets
hspexy I was a bit confused where it said in another in another newspaper article he could not leave the airport so his remaining there was bad for his mental health not being able to go outside, i cannot post the link as it is a yahoo story that will not stay showing
I can only assume he was in departures at terminal two and would have to have passed through customs to leave ?
Here's a short video of him at the airport, there is an ad at the beginning
And another more in depth article about him

I am puzzled by the airport's security allowing this man to behave like this. Why wasn't he barred from living there?
jam45 If he wasn't causing any problems, unlike the riff raff you see causing trouble drinking too much around the lounge areas sometimes then i cannot see how security would want to evict him
The airport management probably knew his history and circumstances and sympathised with his situation
Besides he was a minor celebrity with the film , so it probably brought good publicity for the airport
Was a great film.Sad this fella died. He was less obtrusive and less bother than many people who live outside of airports that's a fact!
telmel If I were younger and fitter, I wouldn't mind kipping in the airport to have a couple of days in Europe.
MelissaLee1963 There was plenty of opportunity to sleep at the airport recently M with all the delays
Just book with BA , your wish would be their command, they are not ageist
I didn't realize that the film was a true story. I did love this film. When I was a kid. I can't imagine not being aloud to leave the airport.
oh wow i saw something about this. Maybe it is a film i should check out. wow 18 years. I wonder what made him decided to reside there completely the way he did.
