Maundy Thursday
In the News
Today is Maundy Thursday and as far as I know, traditionally the Sovereign gives out a set of "Maundy Money" to the same number of people as they've been on the throne.
Does anyone know any more about it?
The Clergy nominate pensioners who have supported the church and the local community.
This year the Queen posted the Maundy Money to 95 men and 95 women. They receive 2 purses, one white and one red. It is a symbolic payment. The white one contains the Maundy Money. It is a symbolic payment, worth 95p, made up of uniquely minted coins. The red one contains a £5 coin and a 50p.
The money is a symbolic payment, rather than having a monetary value, to say thank you for the work that these people have carried out in their local community.
Also it is 95 people as it is the Queens 95th birthday, nothing to do with how long she has been on the throne.
